DIARY OF BONO AND CHRIS TUCKER
Aiding Africa

MTV tonight: 10, Eastern and Pacific times; 9, Central

One of the oddest couples to captivate the media recently was the rock star Bono and Secretary of the Treasury Paul O'Neill, as they toured Africa together in May. Mr. O'Neill stays in the background in the MTV film of that tour, which tonight becomes an affecting installment in their first-person series, "Diary," as Bono, the actor and comedian Chris Tucker ("Rush Hour") and two American college students speak to the cameras while traveling through Uganda and Ethiopia to draw attention to the way AIDS has blighted Africa.

The tour takes them through villages where adults and children have been devastated by H.I.V. Many people have no running water and obviously no money for drugs to fight the disease. Some of the smallest children have eye infections that are heartbreaking to see.

Although Bono makes a quick and vague pitch for more Congressional money to deal with the problem, politics stays in the background, too. The special is meant to open viewers' eyes rather than generate specific action. Touching, gripping and humane, this is one of MTV's most effective documentaries.
