Bono Getting Grammy Humanitarian Award
MusiCares Honor Will Go To Singer In February
POSTED: 9:23 a.m. EDT October 8, 2002

U2 lead singer Bono's worldwide humanitarian efforts are being rewarded by the Recording Academy.

According to the Grammy Web site, the singer has been named the organization's MusicCares Person of the Year, honoring his accomplishments as both a musician and humanitarian.

"Bono is a living symbol of what the MusiCares Foundation and the Recording Academy stand for, Grammy Chairman Garth Fundis said in a statement on site. "His musical accomplishments are matched only by his endeavors to affect positive change on the human condition worldwide."

Bono has spent the past three years lobbying international politicians and organizations including U.S. President George W. Bush, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, South African President Thabo Mbeki, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in support of humanitarian causes.

The singer also joined forces with Pope John Paul II in Rome in 1999 to persuade the Group Of Eight richest nations to increase debt cancellation.

Also, in 2000, he joined Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo to present the world's largest petition (24 million signatures) to United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, calling for much more debt cancellation for the poorest countries.

Among his many other humanitarian efforts, Bono also spent two weeks earlier this year with U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill on a high-profile trip to Ghana, South Africa, Uganda and Ethiopia to make the case for more money for AIDS treatment and to fight poverty.

Bono will be honored at a special tribute Feb. 21, two days prior to the the 45th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony at Madison Square Garden in New York City. With his group U2, Bono has scored 14 Grammy Awards and sold 100 million albums worldwide since 1980.
