Bono Honored by MusiCares
U2 singer saluted for humanitarian efforts
Sweetest thing
Bono will be honored as the National Academy of Recording Arts and Science's 2003 MusiCares Person of the Year in recognition of his work in the music industry and on behalf of African and worldwide charities.
This past year, the U2 frontman toured Africa with U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill as part of his ongoing campaign against poverty and HIV/AIDS in the Third World. The singer is also a longtime supporter of the Jubilee 2000 Drop the Debt effort, which advocates absolving the world's fifty-seven poorest countries of their outstanding international debts.
The Recording Academy, which started the MusiCares initiative in 1989 and last year recognized Billy Joel, will confer the Person of the Year honors on Bono at a ceremony in New York City on Friday, February 21st, two days before the Grammy awards are held at Madison Square Garden.
