UNA-USA Honors Leaders in the Global Fight Against HIV/AIDS
NEW YORK, Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) and the Business Council for the U.N. (BCUN) will present their 2003 Global Leadership and Humanitarian Action Awards on October 8 in New York City. Special guests for the Awards Ceremony will be Secretary-General Kofi Annan, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson, who will give the keynote address, and U2's Bono, who has been campaigning for a greater worldwide response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Bono will speak about
his role creating DATA, an effort focused on Debt, AIDS and Trade in Africa, as well as present the UNA-USA Global Humanitarian Action Award.
The 2003 Award recipients include the Global Leadership honoree, Henry A. McKinnell, Jr., Ph.D., Chairman and CEO of Pfizer, Inc. and the Global Humanitarian Action Award honoree Alex Godwin Coutinho, M.D., M.P.H, the Executive Director of The AIDS Support Organization (TASO), based in Africa. In addition, a special posthumous Global Humanitarian Action Award will honor
Sergio Vieira de Mello, the Secretary-General's Special Envoy to Iraq, who lost his life in the bombing of UN Headquarters in Baghdad this past August.
The awards ceremony will take place at the Sheraton New York Hotel. The event is chaired by Tom Freston, Chairman & CEO of MTV Networks; Alan D. Schwarz, President of Bear Stearns & Co.; and Rajat Kumar Gupta, Senior Partner Worldwide, at McKinsey & Co.
The Global Leadership honoree, Henry A. McKinnell, Jr., Ph.D. is being recognized for his contributions to global health and the fight against HIV/AIDS as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pfizer Inc. Under his leadership, Pfizer was the first top-10 New York Stock Exchange member to sign the U.N. Global Compact, an international initiative that seeks to hold companies to human rights, labor and environmental standards. Since 2001, Dr.
McKinnell has worked with several nonprofit organizations to build a Uganda teaching facility aimed at training doctors and nurses throughout Africa. He also established the International HIV/AIDS Literacy Grants and Pfizer Global Health Fellows programs.
The honoree for UNA-USA's 2003 Global Humanitarian Action Award, Alex Godwin Coutinho, M.D., M.P.H., a native Ugandan, is the Executive Director of The AIDS Support Organization. (TASO). Established in 1987, TASO is now one of the largest indigenous HIV/AIDS non-governmental organizations in Africa with over 80,000 registered patients and 22,000 people receiving direct care and support. TASO's integrated approach recognizes that HIV/AIDS is not only a medical problem but also an issue that crosses familial and cultural boundaries. "We continue to help people to live positively, in dignity, and with hope," said Dr. Coutinho of TASO's work.

Mr. Vieira de Mello had worked tirelessly for the U.N. for decades, serving in many regions, including Bangladesh, Sudan, Kosovo and East Timor. For his dedicated service, he will receive a special Global Humanitarian Action Award posthumously.
