NEWS - Bono Sings Sinatra On 'Good Thief' Soundtrack, Contributes To AIDS Benefit Book

(9/10/02, 10 a.m. ET) -- Back in 1993, Bono joined the late Frank Sinatra for a duet remake of Sinatra's swinging 1950s classic, "I've Got You Under My Skin." Apparently, Ol' Blue Eyes stayed under the U2 frontman's skin--he is featured singing Sinatra on the soundtrack to the new film The Good Thief.
Bono recorded his take of the Sinatra's classic "That's Life" for the movie, directed by Neil Jordan (Crying Game, Interview With a Vampire, Michael Collins).
A loose remake of Jean-Pierre Melville's Bob Le Flambeur, the new film, which is due in March 2003, was screened on September 6-7 at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada.
The soundtrack also includes "A Thousand Kisses Deep" by Leonard Cohen and "Black Is Black" by French pop legend Johnny Hallyday. No release date or full tracklist for a soundtrack CD have been announced.
In other Bono-related news, Bono also contributed to a new book from W Publishing Group, The aWAKE Project, Uniting Against The African AIDS Crisis. The trade paperback collects stories and essays with a goal of educating and mobilizing Americans to help with the AIDS crisis in Africa.
aWAKE stands for: AIDS--Working toward Awareness, Knowledge and Engagement. According to the organization, five people in Africa die every minute from the AIDS virus. A designated portion of the proceeds from the aWAKE Project book will be donated to Jubilee 2000 and World Vision's Hope Initiative for Africa.
Among his comments, Bono states, "Today, this very day, 5,500 Africans will die of AIDS. If this isn't emergency, what is?"
Other contributors to the book, set for publication October 28, include former South African President Nelson Mandela, Bishop Desmond Tutu, U.S. President George W. Bush, former President Jimmy Carter, United Nations Secretary Kofi Annan, President Olusegun Obsanjo of Nigeria, actor Danny Glover, and U.S. Senators Bill Frist and Jesse Helms.
