TOWN BONO CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND
Jul 22 2002

By Jenny Friel

BONO is to be made a freeman in one of Ireland's favourite tourist towns.

Councillors in Killarney, Co Kerry, plan to give the U2 frontman their highest honour to recognise his work as a human rights campaigner.

Cllr Sean Couihan believes Bono has helped to bring the hardships of the Third World to people's attention. He said: "He has used his celebrity to highlight the ill effects of globalisation and he has focused attention on the issue of Third World debt.

"His name has become synonymous with the call for the abolition of this debt.

"Bono has had the support of the Pope and some political leaders.

"But I believe we should allow the ordinary people of our town to show their support of his worthwhile cause and others who are deserving of the award."

Killarney Town Council also wants to honour civil rights solicitor Gareth Peirce in recognition of her work for victims of miscarriages of justice.

The British lawyer helped to secure the release of the Birmingham Six and the Guilford Four.

Cllr Couihan added: "She is a true champion of humanity.

"Her high profile cases did not stop her working with people like Clonmel man Frank Johnson, who had spent 26 years in prison before securing his freedom.

"I applaud their unselfish dedication and determination to this end.

"We should invite these people to our town and show solidarity with their work."

A report on the awards will be given at the town council's August meeting.

Thank you, Gina Marie!
