Bono appeals to Germans

U2 lead singer Bono called on German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder today to support a global fund to fight Aids in Africa, saying Germany was among the countries blocking greater spending. In an open letter to the chancellor, the Dublin rocker said the world was ?witnessing genocide? as 7,000 Africans die each day from Aids. He told Schroeder he was ?appealing on your leadership strength? to free extra European funds to support the fight against the virus. And he said he had spoken to British Prime Minister Tony Blair and French President Jacques Chirac, who both pledged their support.

?But a small group of countries including Germany are blocking this agreement. I and many others have difficulty understanding this stance,? he wrote.
