Bono urges rich to help the poor

POP idol Bono is expected to make a plea in Dublin tomorrow, urging rich countries to help end poverty in poorer nations.

The U2 star has campaigned across the world on behalf of countries ravaged by HIV-Aids and crippled by debt.

He will join Taoi- seach Bertie Ahern and UN Commissioner, Mary Robinson, at a high profile launch of the United Nations' Human Development Report for 2003.

During the 1990s boom for richer countries, 54 countries became poorer, accord- ing to the UN Development Programme, which highlights a development crisis in more than 20 countries.

The report warns that unless rich countries keep their pledge to deliver financing for development, Millennium Development Goals endorsed by world leaders almost three years ago will not be met by the 2015 target date.

The report will be unveiled in a 'rolling launch' beginning at Government Buildings tomorrow and ending at the inauguration ceremony of the African Union Summit in Maputo on Thursday.
