U2'S ARTIST REMEMBERS SHOT TEEN

THE sectarian murder of a Northern Ireland teenager has been remembered in a painting by the Co Down artist who held him as he lay dying. In an exhibition in Dublin, attended by U2's Bono and the Edge, the work of Charlie Whisker was shown for the first time in eight years. One of the paintings remembered the life of schoolboy Michael Browne, 16.

The teenager, from Abbot's Walk, Whitehill in Bangor, was shot twice in the head by UVF gunmen in Castle Grounds in Bangor in 1974 after he had been to look at a Twelfth night bonfire. His teacher, now artist Whisker, had witnessed the killing and has lived with the horror for nearly 30 years.

Whisker has contributed illustrations to several U2 album designs and is the artist who created the metal gates at Bono's home.

In the painting, The Killing of Michael Browne, two hooded gunmen stand over a body. The painting is not for sale. "I deliberately did not make the painting graphic," said Charlie. "Obviously, reality was much grimmer. If there were photos of that scene they would be truly appalling," he said in a recent interview.

The family of the murdered boy attended the exhibiton launch in Dublin's Solomon Gallery.
