WASHINGTON, June 19 /U.S. Newswire/ -- In a Rose Garden statement today, President George W. Bush ( news - web sites) took another step in combating what he has termed the "Genocide" of HIV ( news - web sites)/AIDS ( news - web sites) in Africa. Standing with Secretary of State Colin Powell ( news - web sites), Secretary of Health and Human Services ( news - web sites) Tommy Thompson and Secretary of Treasury Paul O'Neill, the President unveiled an initiative on Mother and Child HIV Prevention, focused mainly on Africa countries.
"The promise of more money to stop AIDS is always a welcome step, but this crisis urgently demands an historic presidential AIDS initiative. This isn't it, but could be the beginning of it if swiftly scaled up into a comprehensive strategy outlining more resources for prevention, care, treatment and deeper debt cancellation," said Bono.
