Mojo Gets Working

Bono, Morrissey and Sir Paul McCartney are amongst the nominations for the inaugural 'Mojo' awards.

The magazine, reflecting their more 'mature' readership, have announced details of their first rock'n'roll hall of fame.

The nominations are intended to honour acts and musicians apparently overlooked by other ceremonies and will be announced at the Banqueting House in London later this month.

David Bowie, Kate Bush and Prince have been put forward for the 'Mojo' Icon award, whilst Sir Macca, Ray Davies and Nick Drake head the nominations for the 'Mojo' Songwriting Award.

Phil Alexander, editor-in-chief at the magazine, explained: "This is about music that's built to last and that has provided us with the soundtrack to our lives."

"We believe there's long been a need to properly honour the extraordinary talents of the artists, bands and songwriters whose careers have been responsible for enhancing our rich musical culture," he said.

"It's absolutely appropriate, therefore, that the inaugural 'Mojo' Honours List comes on the 50th anniversary of the birth of rock 'n' roll," Alexander told the BBC, making reference to the recording of Elvis Presley's "That's Alright Mama".
