VOX POPS IN TO ADDRESS EU LEADERS

BONO is set to address a summit of EU leaders in Dublin today (June 1) to try and persuade them to reform aid development in Africa. The U2 frontman will speak to representatives from all 25 EU member states at the Dublin Castle summit.

Bono will discuss European policies on trade and debt. He will claim the EU?s joint failure to keep to a promise to give 0.7% of GNP in aid is part of the reason for Africa's extreme poverty. EU development ministers are currently undecided whether to pursue a policy of debt relief or one based on targeted aid for the world's poorest countries.

Bono is also due to make a particular plea to the Hilary Benn, the UK?s International Development Secretary, about imminent decisions on the UK budget which campaigners claim could see increases to overseas aid affected by defence spending.

Today?s summit will be chaired by Irish TD Tom Kitt, father of singer/songwriter David Kitt.
