Bono And Geldof Are Up To Summit
U2 frontman Bono and Live Aid mastermind Sir Bob Geldof had talks with Prime Minister Tony Blair at 10 Downing Street yesterday (May 22) to discuss the upcoming G8 summit and the AIDs epidemic in Africa.
Bono ? who?s been involved in publicising the world-wide Drop the Debt campaign and numerous Third World aid charities - explained his reasons for the meeting to Xfm Online while at the Ivor Novello awards last night (May 22).
?The PM wanted to know what was happening in Africa and what he should be doing about it.? he explained, ?G8 [the annual international political meeting] is coming up and we?re trying to convince people that it?d be nice if the G8 is remembered for the war against AIDs and the agreement about what should be done about it.?
?Tony Blair and Gordon Brown both have a lot of passion for Africa and we?re just trying to turn that passion into cash.? He continued, ?We have a lot of faith that he?ll do the right thing, and I think people in the UK are prepared to put their hands in their pockets if they think it will bring about peaceful relationship between the developed world and the developing world.
Bono was also at pains to explain quite how serious the AIDs epidemic in Africa was, and how easy it is for Western countries to help fight it.
?You?re dealing with an AIDs emergency where 7,000 people are dying every day cos they can?t get to medicines that we take for granted.? He explained, ?Its an obscenity but there are many opportunity to get the these drugs to them. We have these medicines, lets get them over there and maybe then they won?t be burning our flags.?
?This moment that we?re living in will be remembered for three things, the Internet, the war against terror and how we let an entire continent ? Africa - burst into flames and just stood around with watering cans.?
