Blair to hold Africa talks with stars
Tony Blair is to host breakfast talks on Africa at Downing Street tomorrow with campaigning rock stars Bob Geldof and Bono. The newly appointed international development secretary, Baroness Amos, will also be at the meeting, along with representatives of non-governmental organisations and academics. "This will be an opportunity to take stock of progress on the action plan for Africa agreed at last year's G8 summit," Mr Blair's official spokesman said.
This year's G8 summit - between the UK, the US, Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Japan and Russia - takes place in two weeks' time in Evian, France. Last year, the leaders agreed on a new partnership for African development (Nepad), which sought to involve the continent's states more closely in solving their own problems.
Hilary Benn, the new Commons spokesman on international development, yesterday spoke at the launch of a Foreign Policy Centre report on African development.
Mr Benn praised Nepad, particularly the fact that it was "African-owned and led".
"The OECD countries are trying to work out what kind of partnership can help Africa achieve its millennium goals."
