U2 was Nominated for an Oscar this year for the first time in the BEST ORIGINAL SONG category at the 75th Annual Academy Awards. Interference strives to bring you complete coverage of this momentous occasion for U2. Below you will find all the information and photos we can cull regarding U2 and Oscar 2003. Enjoy!

The Road To Oscar for U2 started on January 20th, 2003 when they picked up a Golden Globe for ?The Hands That Built America.? Competition was stiff, as they were up against Paul Simon for "Father And Daughter" (from The Wild Thornberrys Movie); Eminem for "Lose Yourself" (from 8 Mile); Madonna for the title song from the James Bond film Die Another Day; and Bryan Adams--along with co-writers Hans Zimmer and Gretchen Peters--for "Here I Am" (from Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron). U2 proved victorious on the day.

However, Bono wouldn?t be Bono if he didn?t let a clever quip slip. As he grasped the Golden Glove in his hand and approached the podium, network censors were greeted with a bit of verbal faux pas. "Ah, this is really, really f--king brilliant,? Bono said. "Really, really great. And, you know, there's a lot of songs in films, and a couple of great songs, and a couple of U2 songs, but not often [do] the songs come out of the characters, and out of the story of the film. And this goes back to a conversation I had with Martin Scorsese over 10 years ago. It's really a very, very special night for our band. Would you say something, the Edge, please?" The Edge responds, "Yes. The films of Martin Scorsese made a massive impact on us growing up in Dublin in the '70s. It's such a privilege to be a small part in one of his movies. Thank you so much!"

With a Golden win behind them, our Irish boys ventured back to Dublin to commence recording the new U2 album. "We're banging the dustbin lids back home in Dublin. Edge, I must say, is really doing some extraordinary stuff," Bono told MTV at the Golden Globe awards ceremony. "It's a guitar record. Which is, I think, our first. It's at the beginning. We're working on the songs right now. There's some nice stuff coming through." Adding more information and fuel to an already rapid fan fire, Bono states that U2's next album should surface by the end of the year or early 2004.

Fast-forward to the morning of February 11th, 2003, when U2 is notified that they have been nominated for an Oscar in the Best Original Song category at the 75th Annual Academy Awards. They are once again in esteemed company ? their fellow nominees include: John Kander and Fred Ebb's "I Move On," from "Chicago," Eminem's "Lose Yourself" from "8 Mile," Paul Simon's "Father and Daughter" from "The Wild Thornberrys Movie," and Elliot Goldenthal and Julie Taymor's "Burn It Blue" from "Frida." Bono comments of the Oscar nod, ?Our dream is that the Academy will recognize the fact that this song grew out of the story and the characters. It wasn't just put in the film. That's what we're most proud of." But despite their superstar status, Bono admits that the reality of the night is a frightening one for the Irish hitmakers. He says, "It's a nerve-racking thought. The only thing equivalent to it would be like playing the super bowl. It'd be a hell of an honor if we're asked to perform. I hope we will be."

U2 were clearly excited from their Oscar nomination as they hit the studio once again in a burst of creative jubilation and golden excitement. Bono told Entertainment Weekly, "We've got a song up on the burner called 'Native Son,'" Bono said. "The best way I think we can celebrate is to just finish out what we're doing: Make this song a scorching 45. The molecules in the air are vibrating quite nicely as a result of that phone call."

Weeks later, in March 2003, U2 are asked to perform at the Oscar ceremony and confirm that they will do so. When rapper Eminem chooses to back out of the ceremony altogether, U2 are hotly tipped to take home the Oscar. Entertainment Weekly states, ?First, the Academy listened to "Lose Yourself," by 8 Mile star Eminem. "Too cool," they sniffed. Then, they checked out "I Move On," John Kander and Fred Ebb's new Chicago tune. "Not cool enough," they said. Then they heard "The Hands That Built America," U2's reverent Gangs of New York theme. "Ahhh, just right." We can't wait to hear Bono's speech.?

However, the golden gleam of Oscar was tuned down when the war against Iraq was launched on Wednesday March 19th. Almost immediately, Oscar organizers cancelled the ubiquitous red carpet promenade, thus throwing the media into a storm of speculation and suspense ? it was conceivable that the Oscars would not go on, or as one media outlet commented, ?the Oscars should just send out a press release the next day.? The Academy countered by saying that they were ?taking it on a minute to minute basis.? The last time the Oscar ceremony was delayed was in 1981 after the attempted assasination of President Ronald Reagan.

Rehearsed and ready to dance with Oscar, U2 arrived in Los Angeles on March 22nd and hit the Oscar party circuit. First on the agenda was the Miramax 2003 MAX Awards, where Bono talked up composer Philip Glass and Miramax honcho Bob Weinstein. Bono arrived with wife Ali, who was celebrating her 43rd birthday on the day.

During the telecast, fellow Irishman Colin Farrell announced U2 who performed a stunning and passionate rendition of "The Hands That Built America." The song was shortened due to time restrictions of the telecast. For the last verse, Bono changed the lyrics to reflect current world issues:
Late in the spring
Yellow cloud on a desert skyline
Some Fathers Son
Is it his or is it mine?

When all was sung and done, the Oscar when to Eminem's song from his movie 8 Mile, "Lose Yourself." Eminem was not present to pick up his award. Bono is said to have visited the celeb-heavy Bar Marmont and sat in a dark corner enjoying a smoke with friends.

Colin Farrell's Gaelic

Hey all,

I heard that Colin Farrell spoke something Gaelic to U2. Does anyone know what he was saying to them?

Well I am very disapointed right now, As I surely thought that U2 should of and would of broght home the gold man last night in L.A
But Wow ! What a surprise "EMINEM" Ive really had enough of him although he is very talented in all.
Anyways U2 played an awesome edited full band version of
"The Hands That Built AmericA" , with Bono's new third verse that caped it all and catured the moment of war and the emotion of the whole evening.
"It's Early Spring, theres a cloud in the desert skyline...."

Now Thats the way to get your protest out!

wow-Ali is gorgerous as always! Gosh! i noticed that too, everyone has a 'mate' but Adam! Maybe this will be his year! I was very disappointed U2 didn't win! The performance was awesome! And yes, that was a far better way to protest then, ahem, certain folks did! And Go Adrian!! Now, that's passion!
