Lugar meets with U2's Bono
By Journal and Courier Staff Reports
WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar on Thursday met with Irish rock star and U2 lead singer Bono in a private meeting in his office at the Hart Senate Office Building.
The two met for more than 40 minutes and discussed efforts by the Republican from Indiana to build a bipartisan consensus and move forward a Global HIV/AIDS bill in the Senate.
Bono is in Washington this week to talk to government leaders about the future of HIV/AIDS legislation and build support for the issue.
The pair also discussed Bono's recent trip to Indiana to discuss HIV/AIDS issues. The trip included a Dec. 5 stop at the Hoosier Heartland Travel Center near Remington, just off Interstate 65 about 30 miles north of Lafayette.
During that Indiana visit, Bono also met with Lugar's pastor at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, Dr. Kent Millard, and discussed HIV/AIDS.
Lugar, who is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has responsibility for legislation that addresses the global HIV/AIDS pandemic and President Bush's request to increase funding.
The senior senator from Indiana last met with Bono in November 1999.
