Washington, DC - The American Ireland Fund (AIF) presented The Humanitarian Award to BONO, renowned lead singer of U2, at its 11th annual National Gala in Washington, D.C. on March 17, 2003. BONO, a son of Ireland, was recognized for his efforts to encourage debt cancellation, increased aid and trade incentives for Africa's impoverished nations through DATA (Debt, Aids, Trade, Africa).

Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson, the 2002 AIF recipient of The Distinguished Leadership Award, and chairman of the board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, made the presentation to BONO.

Nobel Laureates John Hume and David Trimble joined over 1,000 leaders of government and business from the U.S. and Ireland, North and South including Members of Congress, Administration officials, members of the diplomatic community, industry leaders and celebrities from the arts and media.

"The American Ireland Fund is proud to honor BONO, for his humanitarian efforts in Africa," said Kingsley Aikins, President and CEO of the AIF. BONO joins the many distinguished American and Irish leaders who have been recognized for their contributions to peace and reconciliation in Ireland, North and South," he added.

BONO has spent the last three years lobbying international politicians and organizations on humanitarian issues including debt, poverty and AIDS in Africa. Bono's remarks on Monday will focus on the AIDS epidemic that kills 6,500 Africans each day.

Funds raised through the 11th National Gala will help support the Special Olympics World Summer Games which will take place in Ireland in June, 2003.
