BONO BRINGS DATA

U2 frontman Bono has teamed up with Bob Geldof to form DATA, a new organisation that aims to assist struggling African countries.

According to the singer, DATA (Debts, AIDS, Trade in Africa) tackles "three of the most pressing issues facing Africa".

He told the Hollywood Reporter: "It's not just, let's help the poor people. At the heart of this is, do we really believe in equality and equal opportunity?"

Bono, who has long been connected to the fight against AIDS in Africa, believes the work is vital especially given the current anti-Western climate.

"I think we can actually stymie the malaise of anti-American, anti-Western hatred if we actually get out and show what it is we are capable of," he said.

Meanwhile, Bono has talked of plans for an AIDS benefit album, following the cancellation of the proposed Mandella concert in South Africa.

Eurythmics' Dave Stewart, Bono and the late Clash star Joe Strummer had been working on a track entitled, '48864' (Mandella's prison ID number) towards the end of last year, but tragically the song was never completed.

"A week before Joe was to come to Dublin to finish the song, he died, which was really a cruel blow," Bono explained. "I think we're going to put together an AIDS emergency album centred on Africa."

Last week, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences named Bono 'Person Of The Year'. The ceremony took place in New York last Friday (Feb 21), reports Billboard.
