U2 Hopes For Repeat Win At Oscars

(2/17/03, 5 p.m. ET) -- After a two-year run that's included Grammy and Golden Globe Awards, U2 frontman Bono says that being nominated for an Oscar is still special. "The Hands That Built America," which the band composed especially for the film Gangs Of New York, has been nominated for best original song at this year's Academy Awards, which will be presented on March 23 in Los Angeles. The song recently won a Golden Globe, and Bono said that a repeat at the Oscars will depend on the voters' dispositions.

Our dream is that the Academy will recognize the fact that this song grew out of the story and the characters. It wasn't just put in the film," Bono told AP. "That's what we're most proud of."

There's no word yet on whether U2 will perform the song at the Oscar ceremony, which Bono said was "a nerve-racking thought. The only thing equivalent to it would be like playing the Super Bowl (which U2 did in 2002). It'd be a hell of an honor if we're asked to perform. I hope we will be."

U2's Oscar competition includes Eminem's "Lose Yourself" (8 Mile), Paul Simon's "Father And Daughter" (The Wild Thornberrys Movie), "I Move On" (Chicago), and "Burn It Blue" (Frida).

U2 will also be in the U.S. in March to induct the Clash into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame on March 10 in New York City.
