'Chicago,' U2, Eminem, Simon Among Oscar Nominees
The big screen adaptation of the Broadway musical "Chicago" leads the pack with 13 nominations for the 75th annual Academy Awards, including a best picture notice. Among those artists who have earned their first Oscar nominations are Irish rock act U2, rapper Eminem, and veteran singer/songwriter Paul Simon.
Renee Zellweger scored a best actress nomination for her "Chicago" role as Roxie Hart, while co-stars Queen Latifah and Catherine Zeta-Jones picked up best supporting actress nominations. John C. Reilly, who played Roxie's befuddled husband Amos, garnered a best supporting actor nomination, while Rob Marshall earned a best director nod for his first silver screen project.
John Kander and Fred Ebb's "I Move On," performed by Zellweger and Zeta-Jones in "Chicago," is among the nominees for the best song Oscar. The tune will compete with Eminem's "Lose Yourself" from his film "8 Mile," Simon's "Father and Daughter" from "The Wild Thornberrys Movie," U2's "The Hands That Built America" from Martin Scorsese's "Gang's Of New York," and Elliot Goldenthal and Julie Taymor's "Burn It Blue" from "Frida."
Along with U2, Eminem, and Simon, the Oscar mention is also Taymor's first. Ebb and Kander have previously been nominated for "How Lucky Can You Get?" from 1975's "Funny Lady." Goldenthal has three previous nominations under his belt -- one for 1996's "Michael Collins," and a pair for 1994's "Interview With a Vampire." He also earned a nomination this year for his "Frida" score.
Also nominated in the best musical score category is John Williams' work on "Catch Me if You Can" (his 42nd nomination), Elmer Bernstein's music for "Far From Heaven" (his 14th), Thomas Newman's "Road to Perdition" work (his fifth), and Phillip Glass' "The Hours" score (his second).
"Chicago" will compete for the best picture prize with "Gangs of New York," "The Hours," "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," and "The Pianist." The film came out on top at last month's Golden Globe Awards, winning three of the eight honors for which it was nominated.
U2's "Hands" took home the best original song trophy from the Golden Globes, while Scorsese took the best director award for "Gangs." He is also nominated for the equivalent Oscar, while Daniel Day-Lewis is up for best actor for his work on the epic film.
The Academy Awards ceremony will be held March 23 at Los Angeles' Kodak Theatre. Hosted for the second time in three years by actor/comedian Steve Martin, the affair will be broadcast live on ABC television in the U.S. and more than 75 countries around the world.
