Part 10

The night of the concert came faster then Jessie could have imagined. Every day Bono had arrived at her office promptly at noon to take her to lunch. Every evening, if he couldn't see her personally, he would send a little memento of his affection. A rose, a candle, a box of chocolates?and every night he would call to wish her sweet dreams.

A dream was what her life seemed to be. Courted by a rock star of all people! Pam had joined them for lunch on one occasion and still couldn't believe that her friend had made such a good match by chatting. She'd gone out that very day and bought herself a state of the art computer. Her attempts at online dating had already scored her a date every night this week?but no rock stars yet.

Along with a backstage pass, Bono had managed to stake out an area at the foot of the stage for her and Pam to watch the show. As it was her first U2 concert, he wanted her to get the full effect.

The arena was already packed when they arrived. Bono had gone earlier for soundcheck and left Jessie in the very capable hands of his security officer Carlo. Carlo was a very good looking Latino with dark eyes and thick black hair. He and Pam had begun flirting the moment they saw each other. After escorting them to their spot in the crowd, Carlo had hopped the metal barrier separating them from the stage and stood in the space between to continue chatting with Pam.

Jessie looked around in excitement. Everywhere she looked she could see people sporting some sort of U2 memorabilia, from the t-shirts being sold out front to several home made versions of the same. Some people even had banners or body paint to proclaim their complete and utter devotion to their band of choice. 'As well they should,' Jessie thought, 'after all they were one of the greatest bands of their generation, and certainly the best band playing Chicago that night.' Jessie herself had decided to not let the fact that she was dating the lead singer deter her from playing tourist and was wearing one of the new t-shirts from the front as well as a pair of jeans with little rhinestone designs up the leg for flare. Having seen Edge's pants up close, she knew they really weren't very similar, but she'd worn them anyway.

The white noise of the crowd sent Jessie's head spinning as it attempted to compete with the music being blasted out of the loudspeakers overhead. The stage was already set for the opening act and if she strained, Jessie could just see black clad roadies rushing around backstage frantically attending to last minute changes and adjustments.

Finally the lights began to dim as the opening band came onto the stage. Everyone cheered wildly as they began their first number. Jessie's mind drifted a bit as she listened to the music. They were good, but not the ones she had come to see. As they finished the last piece and exited the stage, more crew members rushed up to quickly rearrange the instruments and equipment for the headliner. Jessie watched their movements with a smile. She wondered what sort of life it would be to follow around bands and take care of their equipment. Her mind fell into the gutter as she imagined what it would involve in taking care of a certain Irishman's "equipment." Blushing, she looked around a bit guiltily, noting that Pam was now playing with Carlo's hair. He didn?t seem to mind. She glanced up and down the barrier and was glad to see that the other security guards weren't so easily distracted, but seemed to be keeping an eagle's eye on the crowd, ready for any suspicious activity.

She was startled out of her thoughts as the crowd erupted into a screaming, howling mass of pure energy. She whipped her head around and saw Edge come onto stage, followed closely by Adam and Larry. As they took up their instruments and began playing Bono sauntered up to the front. The crowd went wild. Jessie was grinning so wide, she thought her face might split as she watched him approach the mike. Looking into the crowd, he finally spotted her face and winked broadly before launching in the screaming "Woo Hoo" of Elevation.

The concert was spectacular. Jessie was so caught up in the music, the magic that the band wove around the crowd, that she didn't even notice the passage of time. Bono seemed to have an endless supply of energy. Running and bouncing up and down the stage like a child fresh off his Ritalin. Anywhere he stopped hands would shoot up from the crowd and strain to touch him. He seemed to be willing enough and leaned into them on several occasions, letting them take his weight as he poured his heart out in song. The songs flowed on into another, Bono played to the crowd at every opportunity, blithely trading comments with them, and ever drawing them closer with each word. The spell he wove with his voice made each and everyone of them feel as if he were addressing them in particular.

Stalking up and down the stage, Bono came to a stop in front of Jessie and began to sing; "You say?.you want?" he reached out and caressed her hair, catching her hand in his and pulling gently. " A diamond on a ring of gold?" Carlo snapped out of his game with Pam and lifted Jessie over the barrier and onto the stage. "Your story to remain untold." Edge picked up the melody on his guitar, "when all I want?is you." Bono kissed Jessies hand and pulled her into his arms. Jessie's heart began to beat frantically as they started to dance. Even though they stood in front of over 20,000 screaming fans, Jessie felt as if they were alone. As he sang, Bono gazed into Jessies eyes, so enraptured by what he found there that he nearly forgot the words.

"You say you'll give me?eyes in a moon of blindness?a river in a time of dryness? a harbor in the tempest?" Jessie layed her head on his shoulder and wrapped her arms around him as he stroked a hand down her back. "When all I want?.is you?.All I want is Yoooooooouuuuu?.all I want is yooooooouuuuu." His slight frame shook with the force of his voice.

Jessie smiled as she felt his energy, his hand tightening almost convulsively around her waist. The string section brought in especially for this song provided a sweet rythmn to their dance as they moved across the stage. As the song neared it's finish, Bono gently disengaged from her embrace, kissed her lightly on the lips and handed her back to Carlo.

Once again among the crowd Jessie was surrounded by jealous girls all congratulating her on her good luck in being chosen to dance with Bono. Jessie laughed. If they only knew that he sent her flowers and called her every night! After the second encore, Jessie and Pam began to make their way back stage. Carlo accompanied them, more for Pam's company then necessity, but he got them through any security barriers they may have encountered.

They were deposited in a well-furnished room complete with couches and a table overflowing with food. After a minute or so, the door burst open and four sweaty exhausted men stumbled in. They were all grinning like little boys as they were handed towels and water bottles. Thanking his assistant Bono mopped the sweat off his face and took a big swig of water before he spotted Jessie and Pam across the room. Letting out of whoop of excitement he grabbed Jessie around the waist and spun her in a dizzy circle. Laughing, she held onto his shoulders as he set her down.

"Well? What did you think? Did we live up to your expectations?" Bono looked over his shoulder at the guys who had all paused in their self-congratulations to hear Jessie's answer.

"It was wonderful! I've never been to a better performance! I love your music on CD, but there's a power to the live performance that just doesn't come across in a recording?" Jessie searched for words to better express herself. "It was breathtaking," she deposited a kiss on Bono's cheek, "brilliant?" she deposited one on the other.

"Hey! What about the rest of us?" Larry exclaimed from the couch. Laughing Jessie disengaged herself from Bono's embrace and walked towards the others.

"The drums were the driving force behind every song, they gave it direction and purpose, " she kissed his face before turning to Adam.

"The bass was astounding, the rhythms pure genius." She hugged him around the waist, turning to plant a kiss on his smiling face. He returned her embrace with one of his own. Grinning she moved to Edge.

"?and the guitar made us all soar with the eagles." Edge eagerly wrapped her in his own embrace before kissing her cheek lightly.

"I think that's one of the nicest compliments I've ever received." He leaned back and kissed her other cheek. "Thank you." Jessie had only begun to blush when she saw Bono over Edge's shoulder glowering at his back.

"Hey, you may not want to be so free with those kisses of yours Edgey-boy." Bono said a little threateningly. Edge winked at Jessie before turning to face his friend.

"Jealous are we? Well we can take care of that easily enough." With that Edge walked right up to his boyhood mate, grabbed him by the ears and planted a big slobbery kiss right on his lips. The others, Jessie and Pam included, burst into laughter at the startled expression on Bono's face.

Bono dramatically scrubbed at his mouth with his sleeve before grinning with the rest of them and walking over to throw his arm around Jessie's shoulders. Turning to Pam he politely asked her if she enjoyed the concert.

Dragging her attention away from Carlo's dark eyes she smiled and thanked him for the tickets before turning to Jessie. "Hun, if you don't mind Carlo and I were going to go for some drinks. Did you want to come?"

Edge's face lit up. "That's a great idea! Why don't we all go?" Adam and Larry readily agreed, but Bono had other plans.

"You all go ahead, Jessie and I have some business we need to attend to." He turned to her, "that is of course unless you'd rather go to a club with them?" Jessie shook her head, she really wasn't much for clubs and bars.

"Okay then, we'll meet you all at Brewster's then in thirty minutes." With that Pam turned and followed Carlo out the door. Adam, Larry and Edge quickly left to shower and change.

Bono turned to Jessie. "Will you wait here for me? I won't be more then five minutes." She nodded in the affirmative and he hurried out.

That's it for now ;)
