Your Gypsy Heart Chapter 4: To Follow a Gypsy Rover pt 2

“Um.. Dad?” Trine called, still a little uncomfortable with the word, but even more uncomfortable addressing the man as Adam as he had offered to allow her. She ducked into the men’s dressing room, having received no reply whatsoever when she knocked.

She turned to look to her left, her eyes widening in surprise at the sight of the tall, well-built drummer without a stitch of clothing. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending entirely on who you asked, he was facing the other way, reaching for the clothes which sat atop a vanity table waiting for him.

“Hey! Wot the bloody… Get out o’ here! Whatsamatterwityou!” He yelled as he glanced over his shoulder to see the girl enter. He grabbed the towel he had just discarded and wrapped it around his waist, intending to remove her by force if she wasn’t gone by the time he was covered.

“Sorry!” The girl squeaked, dashing out of the room in a fit of laughter that left Larry red in the face and angry enough to want to punch something.

“What are you carrying on about?” Edge asked, ambling out of the showers himself, having heard Larry’s angry shouting.

“Adam’s brat just waltzed in here to have a gander at me arse!” Larry declared, throwing his hand in the air emphatically. Edge tried to repress the shocked laughter which welled up inside him, but the look on his friends face made that impossible. He snickered, pressing his lips together to hold back a full belly laugh.

“It’s not funny!” Larry grumbled.

“What’s not funny?” Bono asked as he stepped into the room, searching for the cowboy hat he wanted to wear on stage.

“Apparently Larry just gave Trine a peek at the full Monty.” Edge told their friend.

“What?” Adam asked, his eyebrows drawing together in concern as he heard Edge’s statement and ducked his head into the room behind Bono.

“Your daughter just barged in here while I was completely feckin’ naked!” Larry informed him, letting out an indignant huff as he saw Adam’s mouth start to turn up in a smile. “I’d like to see you laughing if you were in my shoes.”

“Wait, you were wearing shoes?” Bono asked, slapping a hand down on Larry’s shoulder as he asked the question in a serious tone while the others laughed at the mental image.

“Piss off!” Larry told him, slapping his hand away.

“I’m sorry. You’re right, it isn’t funny. I’ll have a talk with her.” Adam told Larry, still smirking. “She needs to remember our resident sex symbol is as shy as a six year old girl.” He said, ducking back out the door before his friend could react. He half expected him to follow him out the door to let him have ‘what for’. He sighed as he went in search of Trine, knowing that Larry wasn’t really being unreasonable. He would have to ask her what she was up to.

“Hey, there’s the man himself. Congratulations.” Alex greeted Adam as he entered the green room in search of the mischievous girl. Adam smiled and shook the smaller man’s hand.

“Thank you.” He told him politely.

“You surprised us all, man. But she seems happier than I remember her ever being, so I won’t complain about missing the wedding.” Krash told him, shaking his hand as well.

“I appreciate that. Sorry you weren’t there, all the same.” He replied. “Have you seen Trine?”

“Uh, yeah… she’s around here somewhere…” Krash said, looking around as if he expected her to be hiding in the shadows somewhere.

“Well, if she turns up tell her I’m looking for her.” Adam said, turning to leave the room but stopping and adding, “And tell her not to go looking for me in our dressing room.”

“Oh my God! Is that a hickey?” Trine exclaimed stepping up behind Cat in the girls dressing room. “You guys are way to old to be doing that.” She groaned. Cat smiled at the girl and shook her head. Just the memory of the night before made her skin flush.

“We might’ve gotten a little carried away.” She admitted, applying a liberal coat of cover-up to the blatant love mark on her neck. Trine gagged dramatically at this, but since she didn’t leave the room, Cat figured she had something more she wanted to say.

“What’s up, Trine? Did Adam not like the idea of you hitting the stage with us tonight? I mean, he’s probably just concerned because we only had time for a crash rehearsal. It can be pretty ugly on stage when things go wrong.” Cat said, straightening the collar on the black spandex shirt she’d allowed the girls in wardrobe to talk her into wearing.

“Uh… well, actually I didn’t find him to ask.” Trine admitted.

“What? We have to be on stage in ten minutes!” Cat turned to stare at the girl.

“I know, I know!” she told her, holding her hands up in a sign of surrender. “I was looking for him and … kinda sorta … walked in on Larry naked, and it derailed my train of thought.”

“You what?” Cat asked, already laughing as she realized why Trine had that silly grin on her face.

“Yeah, he’s a little pissed off at me.” She told Cat, still grinning like an idiot. “But damn, it was totally worth it.” She said conspiratorially, making Cat laugh.

“You are a handful, kid.” She told her fondly. “Now, let me see.” She said, standing back to look Trine up and down. The girl had donned a pair of baggy black pants and worn out sneakers and what looked suspiciously like one of Bono’s shirts. A red one made out of a satiny material, a shirt which Cat happened to know Bono was rather fond of.

Her fingers were almost all adorned with silver rings with gothic designs, and her black nail polish had been re-applied as well. Her hair she had actually pulled up out of her face into a set of pigtails which made her look surprisingly cute, despite the black lipstick and eyeliner.

“So, Drill Sergeant, do I pass inspection?” The girl asked, mockingly saluting Cat.

“You’ll do.” She replied. “Bono’s gonna flip when he sees you in that shirt, though.”

“Are you going to make me change?”

“I didn’t say that.” Cat told her as they exited the dressing room. Trine grinned and hugged her playfully from behind.

“You’re the best step-mom ever.” She teased, making Cat groan inwardly at the realization that she was indeed a step-mother.

******************************************************************

The show started the same way as they had started Boston and Chicago’s shows, with Cat entering the arena via motorcycle (hers this time), and even though they had changed the opening song to accommodate the time shortage for Trine to learn their original songs, it won the crowd over just as well.

“What the hell?” Bono asked, stopping and staring at the monitor, Adam nearly running into him he stopped so suddenly.

“That’s my shirt!” He said, pointing at the screen.

“That’s my daughter!” Adam added, never having been approached about Trine joining the group. He was still completely in the dark about her ability to play guitar in the first place.

“It’s nice to see her stealing from other people for once.” Larry quipped, patting the men on their shoulders as he laughed at the scene unfolding.

“I didn’t know Trine could play.” Edge said, stopping to check out what everyone was staring at.

“Neither did I.” Adam admitted.

“Well, that’s kinda sweet, eh? Your daughter playing one of your bass guitars.” Edge told him. “She takes after her Da’.”

“Not exactly. When I was fifteen I couldn’t o’ played Mary had a little lamb.” Adam joked, impressed at the skill the youth had already acquired.

“Larry?” One of the security officers asked, stopping in the doorway to the green room. “There are a couple of women out here with VIP passes they say you sent to them?”

“Yeah, yeah, send them in.” Larry told the guard with an enthusiastic nod.

“Women?” Bono asked Larry with a curious arch of his eyebrow. Before long the blonde from the airport was escorted in, along with her assistant. Larry smiled that million dollar smile of his without realizing it would be wasted on the object of his interest.

“Hi, I’m glad you made it on short notice.” He greeted them, shaking first Jolie’s hand and then Tessa’s. He turned to face his friends, saying, “This is the rest of the band. Bono, Adam and The Edge.”

“It’s nice to meet you.” Jolie told them with a slight nod of her head. Bono reached out and shook Tessa’s hand as Larry introduced the women.

“This is Jolie and Tessa. Jolie is a concert pianist with … I’m sorry, did you say you were with a local Orchestra?” He asked, turning his attention back on the fragile beauty.

“No, not me. Actually, I’m touring on my own at the moment. I’ve recorded a few records with Windham Hill. I don’t draw quite the crowd you have here, but I do all right.” She replied.

“Are you a musician as well?” Edge asked Tessa, making the modest woman shake her head, her cheeks blushing violent red.

“No, no. Not me. I’m Jolie’s personal assistant.” She informed him quietly.

“Well, the opening act just started. You’d better get to your box so you don’t miss anything.” Larry told the women, asking the bodyguard to escort them to their seats.

“What’s that about?” Bono asked playfully nudging his friend on the shoulder.

“What? I knocked her arse over tit on the sidewalk, a couple of tickets was the least I could do.” Larry replied with a shrug.

“I don’t think it’s just because you feel bad about running her down.” Adam teased, his attention drawn back to the monitor. Tequila Monster had completed their first two songs and Cat was introducing the band members now. First Krash and Alex, the same way he’d seen her introduce them before.

Then she wrapped an arm around Trine.

“And this young lady here is a new addition to our band. If you can believe it she’s all of fifteen years old.” She said, waiting for the applause to die down. “Yeah. Impressive, right?” She nodded at the crowd as they continued to cheer.

“She’s playing bass for us tonight, but she’s also a genius on the guitar. Maybe if you’re lucky you’ll get to hear her take lead one of these days. Everyone, how about a round of applause for Trine?” She continued. Adam had to wonder at her decision to use just her first name. Had she decided not to use his name because she wanted to be associated with him? Or because she had not yet checked to see how he would feel about it?

“Thank you.” Trine said into the microphone on the stand in front of her. “And let’s not forget the resident psychotic, hyper-active member of the band. The woman who sings lead, who pulls everything together at the very last second and makes a show out of it, and the woman who plays the funkiest slap bass around. Catalina W… oh, wait. I almost forgot. Let’s try that again. Catalina CLAYTON.” She said, smiling proudly at Cat when the crowd roared loudly in reaction.

“Thank you.” She told Trine through the mic, playfully glaring at her. “That’s right, I have been married for less than 24 hours and I’m here on stage instead of off on some exotic honeymoon. I guess that says a thing or two about an L.A. audience.” She played the crowd, who cheered wildly once more.

“That’s right, I love you guys! You’re the best.” She said as the rest of the band started to play the introduction to their next song. For the bands fourth song, Cat took the bass and Trine sat out for one of the original songs she had not yet had time to learn. The very air charged with the energy of the loud, pure, rock music and the enthusiasm of the crowd. By the end of their fifth and final song, the crowd was cheering as loudly as they had ever heard them.

“I think I created a monster.” Bono told Adam, who had to laugh.

“Have you told them yet that we want to produce their album?” Adam asked.

“Not yet. I thought I would let you have the honor.” He told his friend. They had already allocated the money and studio time, all they had to do now was get Tequila Monster to relocate to Dublin for a few months and record eleven or twelve of their original songs.

“Well it’s probably a good thing, I don’t know if Cat would’ve moved to Ireland with me otherwise.” Adam replied sarcastically. “You ready?” He asked, seeing that Tequila Monster was leaving the stage.

“Right behind you.” Bono told his friend, glancing around in search of his cowboy hat. He swore he had left it right here on the table just a little while ago. He scowled to himself and wondered if his memory was getting even worse than usual. He turned the opposite direction from Adam and the others, ducking into the dressing room to check for his missing hat.

As the door slammed shut behind him, he felt an arm snake around his throat, something cold and metallic pressed into the small of his back. His body went rigid as he tried to think of a way out of what was clearly a bad situation. The thought that these might be his last moments on earth passed through his mind. For a moment he thought that was why he heard her voice. Then he realized it was real as she whispered in his ear;

“Your security really sucks.” His heart leapt as she released her choke hold on him and holstered her pistol. He stared at her for a moment, standing there before him in a pair of tight jeans and cowboy boots. She wore a faded T-shirt and his hat, which looked so natural on her it took him a moment to recognize it as the missing item he’d come in to retrieve.

“Angel!” He said, still distrusting his senses. She smiled a full face smile, flashing her beautiful white teeth at him and he reached out and pulled her into an embrace. He kissed her softly, slowly, deeply until she began to laugh against his mouth. He pulled back to look at her.

“Miss me?” She asked, her dark eyes shining.

“I was afraid I would never see you again.” He admitted. “McMillin called and told me you quit the FBI.”

“Yeah, I was tired of federal bureaucracy anyway.” She told him with a playfully dismissive wave of her hand. “I’m actually thinking of going into business for myself.”

“Really? Doing what?”

“I was thinking private security.” She told him, kissing him softly, her eyes still open to watch his reaction. This time he was the one to smile.

“You’re hired.” He told her. “When can you start?”

“Mmm…” She rubbed her chin thoughtfully. “How about right now?”
