DICLAIMER]] didn't happen, it's all made up

“My God, it’s freezing out there!” Lia exclaimed as she rushed through the door of the bookstore where she worked. Steve and Megan, who were standing behind the pay desk talking, took one look at her and burst into laughter.

“What? Some private joke I’m missing out on?” Lia retorted, trying to look sullen. She failed miserably, and burst into laughter with them. “OK guys, I’m laughing, but what am I laughing about?” she enquired between laughs.

“Oh, oh – it’s nothing. Just the way you burst through the door – you surprised us” Megan said, glancing sideways at Steve and grinning. “We thought the yeti had landed or something.”

Lia looked at them questioningly, before shrugging it off.

“I’m too cold and too tired to push you about this further” she said light-heartedly, unwrapping her scarf from around her neck and unzipping her black jacket. “Please tell me you two haven’t finished off all the coffee – I don’t want to face that weather again, even if it is in the name of caffeine.”

“We’re not that cruel!” Steve replied, putting his arm round her and Megan and shoving a mug of coffee into her hands. “You know we love you really, even if we do laugh at you.”

Lia had been roped into holding fort at lunchtime. Steve and Megan had gone out to get lunch for all three of them, but she knew they wouldn’t be back for at least an hour. It was payday, and as the shop was located right near to the town centre, it meant that they would be blowing all their cash in one go, and then skiving off of her for money for the rest of the month – the usual scenario.

Business had been slow all morning, and Lia still felt shattered. As she went out back to get more coffee, she heard the bell above the door ring.

“I’ll be there in just a second” she yelled out. The shop had had some bad experiences of shoplifting in the past few months, so she figured she should let the customer know that there was someone nearby – ‘never taking any chances’ as her boss kept telling her.

As she hurried out front, the coffee spilt over the rim of the mug, and onto her t-shirt.

“Shit! Shit! Shit!” she exclaimed, as she felt the heat burn onto her skin. She felt her eyes brim with the pain. She crouched down and clutched her stomach, waiting for the sensation to pass.

“Hey – are you okay?”

Lia realised she had totally forgotten about the customer in the shop, and felt her cheeks flush with embarrassment.

“Yeah, yeah! I’m fine. Don’t mind me. Just having a brief coffee-related incident. I’ll be right with you” she said lightly. The customer laughed sympathetically, and she couldn’t help but laugh herself – it was only midday, and she’d already had her fair share of predicaments for the day.

‘Oh well, at least the situation can’t get any worse’, she thought to herself.

As Lia went to stand up, she whacked her head on the edge of the counter above her. The shock of the pain surprised her, and she found herself flat on her backside once again.

“Owwwww!” she moaned, one hand now clutching her stomach, and one hand rubbing the top of her head.

At this point, the customer knelt down on the floor to help her out. As Lia looked up, she was taken aback. The customer was very striking – he had grey hair, but there was a look of handsome maturity about him. His greyish blue eyes locked with hers with such an intensity that she felt herself blush once more.

“Really, I think I should give you a hand,” he commented, with a small smile.

“I’m so sorry – really, I’m so embarrassed” Lia stated as he helped her up. She glanced at the huge coffee stain on her white t-shirt, and ran her fingers through her hair in frustration. “This has just not been my day at all.”

Once she had resurrected her balance, she looked at the man once more, and realised that she recognised him. She wasn’t sure where from, but there was a familiarity about him that she couldn’t place her finger on.

“Oh, do I know you?” she asked enquiringly. “You look really familiar from somewhere…”

“No, I don’t think we’ve met before,” he replied, a slight smile forming on his face.

He had a soft accent, which was very gentle on the ears. It had slight lisp, and Lia guessed he was English.

“Sorry, I just thought…..” Lia rubbed her head again in thought. “Oh, ignore me. I’ve probably got concussion or something. Now, please – is there anything I can help you with?” She let out a laugh at the bizarreness and humility of the situation.

The events of the last ten minutes left Lia and the customer very much at ease with each other. They talked and joked as if they were both old friends, and Lia found herself very comfortable in his company. Time passed quickly.

“Oh, I didn’t realise what time it was!” the man exclaimed suddenly. “I’m sorry to cut you short, but I’ve really go to be somewhere.” His tone was apologetic, and somewhat disdainful. He picked up the books he had been looking at earlier. “Is it OK if I go ahead and get these?”

“Sure – that’s what I’m here for,” Lia commented. “You’re sure you want all of these?” she enquired – the man had bought ten or so coffee table books – the cost was going to be well over £200.

“Absolutely – it’s hard to find independent book shops like this anymore. I take advantage of the situation when I can.”

“Well, we’re always here. Come back anytime you want – we need the business!” Lia said as she passed him the bags. “Well, it was nice meeting you, uh….” She paused, realising she had no idea what his name was.

“Adam,” he smiled, endeavouring her question.

“Nice meeting you Adam. I’m Lia, by the way.” She was a little sad about his impending departure, but brushed it off. “Hopefully I’ll see you back here sometime,” she said, as he walked towards the door. He stopped just short of exiting, and turned to face her again. She saw that he looked a little uncomfortable.

“If you’re free later, would you like to go for a coffee or something?” He asked. Despite his outward appearance of being uncomfortable, the question was confident, and took Lia aback with surprise.

“Oh…” Lia wasn’t sure how to respond, partly because of surprise, partly because of uncertainty. She was attracted to him, and had talked openly with him, but he seemed about twenty years older than her. She thought about it for about ten seconds, before responding.

“I’d love to. Name the time and place, and I’ll be there.” Lia figured that it was short sighted of her to take this offer as a date. He could just be interested in her friendship.

“Great – I’ll look forward to it.” he looked her directly in the eyes and smiled. “I’ve got some stuff to do first, but you think we could meet around five?”

Lia would have said yes to anytime that he had suggested, but five worked well for her.

“Yeah, that’s great – you wanna hit Starbucks or Costa or something?” Lia realised her commercialised suggestions probably made her sound ridiculous, but she couldn’t think of anywhere else off of the top of her head.

“I was actually thinking of somewhere a little more low key – I know a place. Is it ok if I meet you by the bridge?”

“That’s fine for me”

“Ok, I’ll see you later then……. Lia” he paused before saying her name, and she realised that she had been too embarrassed to use his name throughout the entire conversation. She guessed he felt the same.

As he walked out, Lia felt a huge grin form across her face. She felt like a teenager with a crush, and realised that she was hoping that this was going to be more than just a friendship. Almost as soon as Adam had left, Megan and Steve stormed through the door.

“Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiaaaaaa!!!!!” Megan yelled. “Me and Steve have got a big surprise for you!!!!!”.

Megan and Steve could barely stand still – they were clearly excited about something. Steve shoved an envelope into Lia’s hand.

“Open! Open! Open!” they both yelled in unison.

Lia opened the envelope, and pulled out what looked like three concert tickets. She turned them over, and saw that they were to see U2 later in the month. Megan and Steve were the biggest U2 fans in the world, and it was one of the only aspects of their friendship from which Lia felt alienated – she never really ‘got’ the whole hype. She didn’t mind them, but wouldn’t have called herself a fan.

“Oh……” Lia paused.

“C’mon, we know you’re not mad on their music, but there’s still time to convert you, m’dear.”

Steve sounded so enthusiastic that she forced a smile.

“It’s great, really, it is. We’ll have the best time, and who knows – I might even end up loving them as much as you.” Steve and Megan both glanced at her curiously, with smirks on their face.

“Yeah, yeah! OK, I know that will never happed!” Lia yelled, causing them all to burst into laughter once more.
