Someone Else's Dream - Chapter 20
U2, unfortunately, are not mine. They are real people who I have written about here in a fictional situation that never happened. I don’t have their permission to use their likenesses, but I make no money from the story and it really is just all meant in good fun. Remember, please, that this is just a twisting, turning story out of my imagination which should not reflect upon the band or the individuals within it. It’s only make-believe. There will be some adult themes within this story, and almost undoubtedly a lot of offensive language. Read at your own discretion.__________________
Catalina Chronicles Book 4:
Someone else’s dream
Once upon a time was a backbeat
Once upon a time all the chords came to life
And the angels had guitars even before they had wings
If you hang on to a chorus you get through the night
Remember everything that I told you
Well I'm telling you again that it's true
You're never alone cause you can put on the phones
And let the drummer tell your heart what to do
Keep on believing
And you'll discover baby
There's always something magic
There's always something new
And when you really, really need it the most
That's when rock and roll dreams come through
from ‘Rock ‘n roll dreams come through’ by Meatloaf
Bono was surprised when he was greeted not only by Trine, but by Cat and Adam as well. He hadn’t been sure Adam knew anything about his daughter’s situation, and he certainly hadn’t known that he and Cat were on speaking terms once more. It was a day for surprises, and Bono hoped all of them turned out to be the answers to the prayers which he’d been whispering in God’s ear lately.
He knew Laney was surprised as well, and could feel the tension in her muscles at the sight of Adam with his arm around Cat’s waist in a tender, possessive embrace. Bono squeezed Laney’s hand to remind her that they were not there to interfere with Adam’s personal affairs. She didn’t have to approve of the apparent reconciliation; that was entirely up to Adam and Cat. As for Bono and Laney, they had more important things to do.
He released his wife’s hand and embraced Trine, his arms enfolding her as if he could swallow her whole he was so pleased to see her. Her face was still puffy and sore from all the crying she’d been doing, but when Bono hugged her, she smiled. How could she help but smile, wrapped up in a bear hug that was as honest an expression of love as any she had ever known? He may be like an uncle to her, but he did give the best damned hugs, Trine thought.
The group moved into the lounge to talk, Trine leading the way. Bono held her hand as if she were a little girl crossing the street. Cat smiled self-consciously at Laney who forced a smile in return. Adam might be able to forgive her, but it would take longer to convince the people who loved him most that she deserved his forgiveness. That she deserved him at all.
“I – um, I guess dad told you why I wanted to talk to you,” Trine started, her voice cracking. She cleared her throat and continued. “It doesn’t seem right, people like you; good people who want to be parents – who would be wonderful parents – not being able to have a baby, and then someone like me…” her voice trailed off here, her eyes focused on something in the distance, beyond the window. Or, perhaps, on something so distant she was the only one who could see it at all. It was clear to everyone that she was feeling guilty for the decisions which had brought them to this place in time.
“That’s just the way it works, though. Maybe… I think God has a better idea of what is going to happen and when than we sometimes give Him credit for. This happens and that happens, it seems random, pointless, unfair – but the pieces all sort of fall together, you know?” Bono said, sitting on the edge of the couch beside her and gently bringing her attention back to the here and now.
“I don’t know. Maybe,” she conceded, sounding slightly doubtful but not cynical. “Anyway, the thing is, I can’t make the same mistakes my mother did. I won’t. I don’t have a clue how to be a mom, and I know it’s hell growing up thinking your father doesn’t give a damn. I mean, I know better now. I know you didn’t know about me, but when I was a kid I didn’t know that at all, and it was hard. Really hard,” Trine said, turning to Adam for the last part, to reassure him that she did know he loved her, now.
“The father…” Trine’s voice was drowned by a sudden rush of tears that closed her throat and blurred her vision. She shook her head as if disgusted with herself and wiped her eyes with the heels of her palms. “Toby,” she corrected herself, “doesn’t want anything to do with me or the baby.”
“Simone’s Toby?” Laney wondered, barely recognizing her own voice, not having meant to speak. Trine hung her head, laughing bitterly at the words.
“That’s him,” she affirmed. “So, I thought about … I considered not having it,” she admitted, and Bono’s heart ached like a giant knot of rope being pulled tighter and tighter in his chest. “Then I thought about you guys. I can’t imagine two people who deserve to have a baby more than you, or any less than me and Toby. So, if you want…”
“We want. Of course we want,” Bono told her, sliding in and wrapping an arm around her shoulder, pulling her close. Even if she had tried to resist, he would’ve worn her down. She didn’t resist, just lay her head on his shoulder and sighed with relief.
“Trine, I can’t imagine any bigger compliment, any better honor than to have you trust us to raise your child,” Laney told her, moving from the chair which she had occupied to sit on the other side of the girl, resting a gentle hand on her knee. There were tears in her eyes, and Trine wondered what life might have been like if her own mother had recognized her inability to be responsible to raise her. She was filled with hope; hope for her baby, hope for Bono and Laney, and surprisingly, hope for herself.
They discussed all of the positive factors of their decision; Trine would be able to pursue her career while knowing her child was well cared for. She would have the opportunity to know him or her, to see them whenever she desired. Bono and Laney would be its parents in all the important ways, and this baby would undoubtedly be loved. They would know its family medical history, which was always a concern with adopted children. They may not know much about Toby; and what they did know certainly didn’t leave them with a good opinion of him, but they did know Pauley and he was a great kid.
Then they discussed the potential negatives.
“What about the father? He has some say in this, whether he deserves it or not,” Laney wondered.
“Simone and I talked about that – we thought maybe you could have your lawyers draw up an agreement. He’ll be so glad that I’m not coming after him for child support or to get my name in the tabloids because of his ‘celebrity’ status that he’ll sign off on a quiet adoption. The only issue is that I don’t want him to know that it’s Bono who is adopting the baby. Not until after he’s signed off. I can’t stand the thought of him using this as a way of getting more attention for himself,” Trine replied. Though it was an unsettling possibility, everyone agreed that her plans to try and minimize the drama were sound.
After that discussion was closed, she added the one other thing that had weighed heavily on her mind.
“The tabloids are going to think the baby is Bono’s and mine,” she said, making a face as if disgusted by the thought of having been with Bono that way. Bono feigned offense. Trine giggled at him, rolling her eyes playfully. “Ew!’ She teased, trying to wrestle free of the playful headlock he put her in.
“That wasn’t the point, anyway. The point is they’ll think you cheated on Laney,” she explained and Bono frowned at that thought.
“Rather than try and hide the fact that you’re having a baby while you’re promoting the album or putting it off even longer, why don’t we just say that you’re acting as a surrogate?” Laney suggested. “It’s already leaked to the media that we’ve been seeing fertility specialists.”
Trine’s eyes brightened as she mulled this idea over. Soon she was nodding eagerly.
“I think that might work!” She agreed, and Adam seconded that opinion.
“Oh my God,” Laney said, letting all of the breath out of her lungs in a giant exhalation. “This is really going to happen, isn’t it?” She grinned at Bono and he grinned back, both of them radiant in their happiness.
“If you two are going to make out, let me get out of the way before this gets really twisted,” Trine teased, hurrying to her feet and out of her position between the happy couple.
“I always used to worry that one day I would have children that reminded me too much of Adam,” Bono teased, making both Adam and Laney’s faces turn bright red as they burst out in shocked laughter. Bono tried to appear irritated but couldn’t help but smirk at his friend.
“You smell pretty, mommy,” Pauley informed Simone matter-of-factly, following her from room to room as she got ready for the evening ahead of her. She glanced over her shoulder at her son and smiled at him as he leaned in close and sniffed the air.
“Thank you, Pauley. I didn’t realize I smelled that much different than usual,” she chuckled, cupping his chin for a second with one hand as she looked at him lovingly. He beamed up at her, that sweet little boy smile which she hoped he never lost.
“You look pretty, too,” he added, as an afterthought. “Daddy told me not to forget to tell you that.” Simone laughed again at the boy’s candor. At least he was honest, she told herself. That was something he had learned from Larry. Her fiancée couldn’t tell a lie to save his life.
“I think he meant you should tell me that after I’m all dressed up,” Simone informed her son playfully. She was still in her bathrobe, freshly showered and smoothed over with a flowery body lotion that made her feel like some sort of pampered princess. Her hair was also done, and a hint of perfume with the same fragrance as the lotion had been dabbed on her wrists and throat. Pauley shrugged, losing interest in the subject.
“When is Trine going to get here?” he asked, his eyes turning toward the door. Simone had wondered if Pauley had a crush on Trine before, but in the past few weeks she had become certain of it.
“Soon,” she assured him. She sent him back to the lounge to watch TV and moved back to her bedroom. She paused in the doorway and remembered the first time she had stepped foot into this room, back when it had just been Larry’s. She could not have imagined that day how at home she would come to feel there over the next couple of years.
She moved into the walk in closet and slid the terrycloth robe off before digging around in the drawers of her dresser for panties and stockings. She slipped into the little black dress she had bought especially for the occasion and looked at herself in the full length mirror. She looked like a stranger; a woman far more elegant than the army brat who still preferred hiking to waltzing and motorcycles to limos.
She draped a thin golden chain around her throat and a matching bracelet around her wrist, pausing briefly to admire the engagement ring Larry had finally picked out just a few days before. It was beautiful, simple but elegant; it reminded her of him.
She finished her make-up and bent slightly to fix the black silk stockings which she had never worn before. They weren’t so different from nylon stockings in some ways, but she was more aware of the garter belts which held them up than she would like to be. At the same time, they made her feel sexy, she had to admit. She caught a glimpse of him in the mirror, but showed no sign of it. He was watching her from the doorway, silent and apparently enrapt.
She hiked her skirt a bit higher than she needed to as she reached the tops of the stockings which came to mid-thigh. She wanted him to get a good look at the lacy garters. She’d been torturing him this way for the past week, and she had loved every minute of it. Ever since he’d started spooning her in his sleep, rubbing up against her in ways that left little to the imagination about what was on his mind, she’d been taking advantage of his heightened interest.
He had certainly done the same to her at times. She could still picture clearly the way he looked on that night she’d been thinking on a few moments ago; the first night she’d given in and admitted her desire for him. He’d been standing on the front step, water from the pool running down the muscles in his arms and glistening on his bare chest. Those silver blue eyes had been so smug that night, making sure she knew he had seen her looking.
For a man who had been so uncomfortable with his appearance for as much of his life as he claimed, he certainly wasn’t shy about showing it off anymore. She was smiling at the memory when he finally moved into the room, clearing his throat as he approached the closet as if trying not to startle her.
“Enjoy the show?” She asked, glancing at him coyly over her shoulder. The guilty smile on his face was answer enough on its own, even if there hadn’t been other evidence of his interest. Larry rubbed the back of his neck and shifted his weight, trying not to be too obvious. Simone felt a twinge of guilt; if she kept teasing him this way he might explode before they reached their wedding night.
“You look incredible,” he told her, and she smiled as she turned this way and that, examining herself in the mirror.
“Do I look like the wife of a rock star?” she asked playfully. Larry stepped into the massive closet with her and took her hand, kissing her knuckles and twisting her ring until the diamond was perfectly centered on her finger.
“You’re way out of my league,” he told her. “Everyone is going to wonder what you’re doing with some guy who just sits there and hits the drums for a living.”
Simone had to swallow hard as her throat threatened to close; her heart began to race and she couldn’t seem to catch her breath. The backs of her knees began to sweat, and all the blood in her body started to concentrate in different places. She hadn’t even realized she’d been stepping backward until she felt her back press into the wall; a low dip in the dress leaving much of her skin exposed.
She smiled weakly and pressed the palm of her hand against his firm, warm chest. He was too good at this. She wanted to keep the power she had gained, if only for a little longer.
“You might want to start thinking about other things. If you walk around at the gallery in that condition, people will think you like my portraits a little more than you ought to,” she teased him. She chuckled at the way he drew back an inch, the surprise in his expression as he realized he hadn’t seduced her quite yet.
She couldn’t help herself, though, and had to steal a taste of his gorgeous lips. She kissed him slowly, running the tip of her tongue over the smooth skin of his lower lip before pulling away and leaving him in the closet alone and more than a little dazed.
