Bono brought to hospital over chest pain scare

By NIAMH HORAN, Entertainment News Reporter

Bono has suffered a health scare after experiencing heart palpitations while on holiday in the south of France.

The U2 frontman was taken to hospital in Monaco by his wife Ali Hewson when he complained of chest pains.

The star spent a number of hours at the Princess Grace Memorial Hospital in Monaco but fans will be relieved to hear he wasn't kept in overnight.

The health scare came shortly after Bono had finished an exhausting world tour -- during which the band played to 7.1 million fans in 30 countries -- and was enjoying his summer holidays with family and friends.

"As I understand it he was seen by a doctor -- he is okay now but he got a fright," said a source.

After 48 hours of medical tests last Wednesday and Thursday, the U2 singer was spotted unwinding in Monaco's exclusive nightspot Saas Cafe last Friday night.

Joined by his wife Ali, his close friend Julian Lennon and Irish designer John Rocha, a weary-looking Bono, without his trademark sunglasses, dined in a quiet part of the glitzy restaurant.

Renowned for his partying, Bono uncharacteristically left early in a new Audi A8 while his pals Lennon and Rocha followed in a Mercedes behind.

Bono and Ali have a villa in Eze-sur-Mer, an exclusive village of billionaires just outside the Monaco tax haven.

It is understood that the Beautiful Day singer was examined by a top heart specialist and told to get plenty of rest.

The hospital visit comes only months after a separate health scare when the rocker was forced to undergo emergency back surgery for an injury sustained during training for the band's physically demanding tours.

The star was said to have been in great form after recently attending a party in Tinakilly House in Co Wicklow before returning with Ali to the south of France.

The U2 frontman is renowned for his socialising on the French Riviera, inviting celebrities from far and wide to his luxury mansion, which he co-owns with The Edge.

The duo have been mingling with A-listers on the French playground for the rich and famous since 1993, when they splashed out a reported €3.8m on the coral-coloured seaside pad.

The rocker hit the headlines most recently when his fortune soared after one of his Facebook stake quadrupled in value to nearly $1bn (€700m).

The U2 singer's investment firm Elevation Partners paid $210m (€146m) for a stake in Mark Zuckerberg's social networking site in November 2009.

But after another investor sold his stake, pushing up the price, Elevation's stake soared to around $975m (€670m) in value, a staggering 400 per cent increase on the initial investment.

Via Julian Lennon's FB and Twitter. "For those whom are fans of Bono, the recent reports about him going to hospital with chest pains this weekend, were completely false & just the media trying to stir things up, as usual... He did, however, go for a regular check up last week, but was given the all clear! He's in fine form! "

Thanks Gg!!!

Ah woops, forgot to put it in here. :D Thanks.

Yeah, it's a disgrace how the press go on such a story and fabricate such lies. I'm glad it turned out to be fake though. Hope he's having a great wedding anniversary.

I'm so glad to hear that! I went to atu2.com and saw the info there but didn't know it was fake until I came to Interference. (Interference is good for something after all! ;) ) Not only is it good that he wasn't really having chest pains, but that he's taking the time to get a check-up.

And are the newspapers so bored that they have to make stuff up? What is wrong with them?

LONDON (Reuters) - U2 lead singer Bono on Sunday denied reports he had been taken to hospital after complaining of chest pains while on holiday in the south of France.
The 51-year-old did attend the Princess Grace hospital in Monaco, but a spokeswoman said it was for a routine checkup.

"Despite press stories to the contrary, Bono has not suffered a recent health scare," the spokeswoman said in a statement given to Reuters.

"Reports of his being rushed to hospital for emergency treatment are untrue. Bono is in good health and enjoying a family holiday in the south of France."

The health scare was reported by the Irish Independent newspaper and picked up by online music news outlets.

Bono and Irish rock band U2 have just completed a world tour which broke ticket sales records.

The group was forced to cancel several gigs in 2010 and pulled out of the Glastonbury music festival when Bono injured his back. They returned to perform on the main stage at Glastonbury this summer.

The man can't even go to a medical checkup without the media creating drama. Sometimes being famous must really suck.

Truth!

This Irish Independent seems very focused on U2 (possibly because it's an Irish paper?) For instance, it is the only media outlet/ media tabloid that shoots pap pics of Adam.

It also gave us the article of Adam's mom passing, which I had hoped was a false story.

In this case, some pap obviosuly saw Ali and Bono heading to the cardio center and started making stories up! Anyway, glad B is well, and I hope he takes good care of himself (Ali will take care of him too!)

I think we all need to give mr Julian Lennon some praise here, being so quick in solving this with a simple Twitter message
As usual u2.com is behind on these things.

So happy that he's okay.
Hope Adams okay as well !

Yes, but the truth is they shouldn't be forced to issue any statement at all concerning Bono's health or health issues of the band or their families, it's nothing but a private matter and really nobody's business. It's horrible that someone can't even go to a routine checkup without being followed by paps or reporters who make up dramatic stories. U2.com can only release a statement if the band approves to it. The U2 band members are very private people and I'm sure they don't like to see their personal issues discussed publicly. I don't think this would have happened in Ireland. I'm sure Bono goes to see docs on a regular basis when at home and no one reports about it. It's strange that an Irish newspaper was the first one to pick up that story when Bono isn't even in Ireland. French media obviously don't care. The Irish Independent seems to have an unnatural U2 obsession going on these days. Must have been a slow news day.
