I knew my Canadian girls would chime in with the George love.

It's so true, though. I met him and turned into a swooning pile of goo.

Oh yeah, I remember you being at his show or something a few years back. I love his style of journalism. The Hour was funny

Aw. He's kinda cute

I wish I could dissolve into PLEBAland instead of having a school-oriented life. Fff. Much more fun to look at pretty pictures than to keep buying stuff for classes >.<

I need some advice:

I've been toying with this for a good year now. I have my undergrad bachelor's degree in political science. I was supposed to go back to school this year for a 4th year. Thing is, I'm wanting to not go back. I don't need to since the 4th year of poli sci is basically qualifying courses for a masters program which I know I'm not going for. There are a lot of great job opportunities out there right now in my field, specifically one job I'm applying for with the Red Cross (I know someone that works there that will help me get in).

I just have so much pressure from my family to go for the fourth year. It's just so much money (another 6000 dollars on top of the 20,000 I owe right now in student loans).

Would it be such a bad thing if I worked for a year and see where that takes me? I need to pay down my loans and I already have my bachelor's degree.

I've done a lot of research for the jobs that I'd want and I have the qualifications to get them (my university degree, plus experience with charities, I volunteered for World Vision for a long time, plus I also now have experience working for my university planning huge events with the job I have now).

I don't think it would be such a bad thing at all. To me, that seems like the smart thing to do, especially if you're already qualified for what you want to do.

If that's what you really want, then your family should respect that.

Kristen—I'd say don't do the 4th year if it's that much money and isn't necessary for the jobs you want...

Thanks guys

It's just that I'm torn because my family keeps pressuring me saying I'll never get a job if I don't have the fourth year.

You have the undergrad degree already? As long as you have a degree under your belt, I'd say go for the jobs and see where it takes you. If you feel you need it later, then go back and do that year!

That's a tough situation, Kristen. I don't really know what to suggest. I'm not the greatest at giving advice.

I do know that you need to do whatever is best for YOU, and screw what anyone else thinks/says. It's your life, and you need to do what you want. It may suck to go against what your family is saying, but in the long run, it has to be your decision. If you're at peace with what you decide, that's the most important thing. You'll be happier that way.

I hear ya about the family pressure. But I don't think there's any harm in taking a year off to try to get a great job. You can always go back to school. School will always be there. Can you take a semester off and if you don't have a job by then, THEN think more seriously about that 4th year.

My dad is fond of telling people how he thought I was crazy for majoring in theatre, sure I'd never be able to find gainful employment in the field. Well between working as a stagehand for Broadway touring shows, teaching for 15 years, and now... who know what's next... He loves that I proved him wrong and is proud that I did it my way - even though he had my best interests at heart.

I you guys. Thanks for all the great advice.

I forgot to mention that I've always had, and still do, have the teaching thing in the back of my mind. It's something I've always considered. It's hard to find a university, though, that accepts political science as a teachable subject.

I think I'm going to find a job here for the time being, pay down my debt, and really make some hard decisions over the next 6 months- year, and decide if the teaching route is right for me. During that time, I can also see what kind of job opportunities there are for me with my bachelor's in political science and what my possibilities are for the future with that degree.

Amy, yep I do. I have my Bachelor's of Political Science. I finished my 3rd year when I finished those summer classes. I was only missing those 1.5 credits which I have now.
