Opinions On Ali/Bono Relationship

First of all, let me say this post is in no way meant to be disrespectful of Ali or Bono or their marriage.

I have wondered about their relationship. Clearly they have a deep connection and dedication to their marriage. IMHO however, Bono seems to be the one that "pursues" Ali. In some of the lyrics he's written, a recent interview I read, and on many of the pictures I've seen he seems more into her than the other way around. It's almost like she's his caregiver. Like maybe the mom he never had (after all she passed away when he was barely in his teens).

Am I crazy? Again, I mean no disrespect.

Well, personally, I feel that Ali has been a literal harbor in the tempest for Bono in many ways. And they've been together so long...it seems like a very comfortable match....they're best friends and lovers, how can you go wrong?

Bono just wouldn't be the man we all adore without Ali. I'm so glad they found each other. Besides, keep in mind she's not the one in the limelight like he is. However, pictures speak volumes - go look in the Best photos of Bono and Ali thread and see for yourself how crazy they are about each other!

I think their relationship is so much more amazing because it clearly seems to have flaws (If we go on the lyrics Bono has wriiten about their relationship), yet they still seem undeniably in love. There's something really refreshing about that, when so many celebrity couples are so keen to paint a picture of 'the perfect marriage'.
It's funny you should mention this - my friend was asking me only last nite what the lyric 'you can sew it up but you still see the tears' was about.

But she's not writing song lyrics or talking in interviews, maybe she "pursues" him to, but more privately . In the interviews where she has talked about their relationship, she says that they have a good relationship with "total respect" of each other, which is really great when you think about that. Plus, Bono has said many times that there is more that one "story" in his songs, and he writes about other people as well as himself. And I think in the pictures, he's just more comfortable in the public eye and probably more comfortable with being affectionate in public. I think they way she looks at him in photos is very wonderful

I agree. (although I don't think anyone has been disrespectful in this post). I have to say, him having such a steady relationship with the same person for so long makes me respect him all the more. (and her too).

I think their special love is one of the driving forces behind Bono's lyrics. They may be based on whats going on in his life at the time or worries that are in his mind and imagination or even from his observations from other relationships.

It has popped into my mind on occasion that Bono seems to always be chasing after Ali, complimenting her and mentioning her in interviews. But thats probably because he's in the limelight and she isn't. I would love to sit down with her and have her gush about him But I don't think she's the gushing type. He's the emotional one and she seems to be the rock.

You need both in a relationship. But most importantly you need to trust each other and lean on each other. Its obvious that whatever one needs, the other provides.

I see them together and their love is always real. Not staged for the cameras or the red carpet.

I think Ali is a very stabilizing force for Bono. She's always been there for him during all of the ups and down of his career. He needs her more than she needs him. They've always been very honest about the problems in their relationship and have always been able to talk and work out disagreements and such. That's why they've been able to make their marriage work, and they've done a fantastic job. I really respect both of them for this.

I don't know about that. I remember the section in Bill Flanagan's book where Bono's father said that he had tried to warn Ali against marrying Bono because he wasn't the settling down type but Ali wouldn't listen because she was 'too much in love'.

In the 1987 Time magazine cover story the writer tells of Ali (who was in Dublin) getting mad at Bono (who was in America) during a phone call and hanging up on him. She then flew to America to surprise Bono and make up in person.

In Neil McCormick's recent book Killing Bono, he talks of Ali being fiercely protective of Bono.

These are all published indications that Ali is very 'into' Bono. Any longterm relationship is bound to have some rough patches, but I don't care if you are married or not, you don't just fly halfway across the world to make up with someone unless you are pretty hopelessly in love.

A woman I know once pointed out that Bono doesn't wear a wedding ring but I have noticed that he wears a ring on his pinky. Is that just a non-traditional way to wear a ring or does the ring have some other significance?

I believe he has been wearing that ring for a long time and that it was his Father's. Not POSITIVE, but I recall reading that somewhere.
