As someone who has been in that position about a million times, I can tell you that the guy at Bono's feet is in a boat and holding on to the dock. Bad things can happen if someone is stepping into a boat and you forget to hold the dock. Ooops!

And Bono's legs are positively luminous. I wonder if they glow in the dark?

(By the way, I'm glad to see he's carrying his own towel. I'd hate to think he needed a towel wrangler.)

Having been in this position numerous times helping little cousins, it looks to me like he's holding onto a dock. Bono's about to step down into a boat, you just can't see it there. That's my guess.
