You made me sooooooo mad with this!!

Even IF the toothpick was to be a PHALLIC symbol, who gives a damn?! It's just a SYMBOL! And besides, what would that even say? "Hey, there's a big penis in your drink!"? Yea, that MUST be what they wanted to say.

And another thing, you CANNOT *DRESS* +GAY+!!! I know MANY gay men who dress worse than any of my straight friends. And about the "suck you" line: Men can SUCK women too you know. Well, and your last comment, about the YMCA, I just flat out don't get. What is it about gay people that screams family gym to you?

Lilly, I think you may be too young to remember the Village People song entitled "YMCA"...gay men dressed up in funny costumes. Big hit. Funny reference.

Anyway, we're just having fun with this thread. It's not meant to be derogatory towards U2 or gays at all. On the contrary.

And my gay friend slept with the cowboy from the Village People (I'm serious!). But that's another story...lol

Ohhh, thanks joyfulgirl. Must be MY FRIGGIN MISTAKE!!!!!! I know what the Village People are, and I know the reference, thus the sarcastic EYE ROLL afterward. Oh, I must have been wrong when I took this GAY thread as derrogatory. Calling it GAY because of symbols that are clearly inaccurate and SEARCHING for LYRICS to fit. This MUST be a bona fide thing right?

Lilly > Well, snap my head off, why don't you. To me it really seemed like you didn't get the reference. I think you're overreacting. I have spent my entire adult life in the company of many gay men and they do have a sense of humor and I don't know any gay men who would be offended by this thread. If I am wrong, I hope a gay man lurking will speak up.

This is the heart of it here, as Lilly mentioned people should 'search lyrics first' but most people go by what they see first, and to a lot of people, it LOOKED that way. There is nothing on the album that I know of (I don't know about any hidden references or anything) that would make people think that, it has to be the stage show and the 'look.' (Village People, etc)
I'm not justifying that opinion, only stating it because I have heard it.

I agree with you Joyfulgirl.I'm obviously not a gay man, but I have several close relatives who are and I know they would be laughing their asses off at this thread. Let's not take this so seriously. Lemonboy was just up to his usual tricks (love you Lemonboy!)and I'm sure he didn't mean for people to start fighting about it. Well, I hope he didn't anyway. Come on girls, can't we all get along?

LOL Bono's American Wife! If Lemonboy wants to have 'fun' I dare him to post this topic on EYKIW LMAO!!!!!!

Aha! Now I see what Lemonboy's real motivation was in starting this thread!!! If he misbehaves, he knows he can expect a little PLEBA girl discipline!

Go get him Veranda!

I have to admit, I've found a loophole,
When arguring about the Village People,
I have to stop and wonder why
We get so defensive about these guys?
Yes, they're great and cute and funny
And still have managed to make their money.
When thrown to the sea, they tend to float,
And return triumphant, worthy of gloat.
So why is it that an innocent thread,
Is something over which we lose our heads?
So no need to offend, or get sarcastic,
WE ALL LOVE U2!! THEY ARE FANTASTIC!!

Fine. Call it gay all you want. Just understand that the tone in which each of these posts were written is that being gay is a negative thing which it is not. Sorry if I'm being *hypersensitive* about the "gay" issue here, but I'm just thinking of my friends who are gay. The best of them died last year on Valentine's Day and it's getting a little too close to that time for me not to be thinking of him constantly. While with him one time he and I took a trip to the AIDS clinic in San Francisco. Many people were standing outside of the doors protesting that AIDS was God's way of killing off gay people. Thus is the reason I am *SO* hypersensitive of people making "gay" remarks. So call POP gay all you want. Talk about the made up symbolism in both the "gay" lyrics and the "gay" imagery (not to mention those crazy "gay" beats) but make sure to realize that homosexuality itself is NOT a bad thing in any manner.

Lilly--if you read my post, you know that my best friend (of 23 years), a gay man, just died in October. So I am sensitive on this issue as well. I am the same age as Bono (somehow that sounds better than "I'm 41") and I've been fighting for gay rights since the 70's, so I can tell you I am really very sensitive to gay issues and I honestly don't think there was anything objectionable in this thread, although that is of course subjective. I will admit that if anything I've been immature for my age, but wtf--life's short, as I've learned.

Nevertheless, I am very sorry if I offended you, and terribly sorry about the loss of your friend, which I remember reading about over in Free Your Mind. It is just awful to lose someone close--I have been nearly inconsolable myself. But I know that my friend in the ethers is laughing over my shoulder at this silly thread.

Okay, I'm sorry, but sexuality can't be reduced to "hahaha he wore a see-thru shirt!!" I don't care if Larry or anyone else is gay, straight, bi, whatever, but the notion that you can pin people into a category because of what they wear, especially when they're PERFORMING on a stage in front of thousands of strangers and use that to make a direct inference about his or her sexual orientation upsets me. It's a SHOW, people. U2 makes wonderful music that sounds sincere and is very inspiring. But I hope that they don't walk around the kitchen in fake muscle shirts or work in the garden in their leather suits and Fly shades. And Lemonboy, toothpick+olive+glass=MARTINI. Let's not look for things that aren't really there. Martinis, at least in the US, are associated with a kind of suave coolness. The rat pack drank them, james bond drinks them. Phallic symbol is a stretch.
The attitude about homosexuality on PLEBA really bugs me. It's always "saving the world from homosexuality" or "Village People!" or something. It's NOT a joke. It's just not funny. Gay men are NOT necessarily dainty or flamboyant. They do not exist solely to make you laugh. They are PEOPLE. They are doctors, teachers, athletes, artists. They don't necessarily frequent discos or like to dance. You can't look at someone, or talk to someone for 5 minutes and decide, "haha! he's gay!" or "She's a lesbian!" then point and laugh.
I'll leave now.

Sorry Lemonboy, as much as we may love you, you asked for it

We all know that Lemonboy was just trying to be funny when he started this thread but I'm seeing shades of the "tension" we experienced a while back. It's not fun anymore when we have hurt feelings and accusations flying back and forth. Before we have more people get upset and leave PLEBA, can we please just let this thread die?

I agree w/ you exactly and he meant to be funny and all, but some people didn't find the humor in it right away, for their own reason, whether they are Pop lovers or do not like the idea of referring to something as being gay or alluded to homosexuality, cause that can be a very sensitive subject. I'm not that mad at you Lemonboy, just a little bothered, but I wasn't surprised at all to see some negative reactions to your comments, that's all.

So let's give peace a chance...

I am perfectly ready to let this thread die, and have already apologized for any hurt feelings I may have caused, but since I think this reference was for me I'd like to respond to it because I feel misunderstood.

As I said, my now-deceased gay best friend, believed that Larry is gay. I did not agree, and we argued about this for many years--good-naturedly. Whether it is PC or not, he and the many, many, many gay male friends I have had over the years, did in fact, with uncanny accuracy, identify gay men by their attire, along with other variables as well. You may not like it, but they did/do, hence the popular expression "gaydar." If you are gay or have gay friends, you know that gaydar is an astonishing talent. I will add, though it isn't necessarily relevant, yet I feel like I want to say, that my friend really did not fit any gay stereotypes, so I don't mean to paint a picture of some effeminate queen pointing at men in certain clothing and giggling, "gay!" It's not like that at all.

Anyway, what I failed to mention before, was that my friend wore a see-through black mesh shirt to gay clubs on a regular basis, and thus, knowing my friend intimately as I did, I know that had he lived to see Larry's shirt he would no doubt have used this as ammunition in our 15-year-long "argument" over Larry's sexuality.

It would be great if we lived in a world where people were completely unconcerned about others' sexuality so that in talking to someone, or observing them, the thought "gay" or "straight" never entered our minds, but for whatever reason, we mere mortals remain curious about sexuality and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. It's what you do with that that matters. Do you note it and move on, or do you discriminate against them? While there was some stereotyping going on in this thread, it was not, in my opinion, of a dangerous or offensive nature, because the spirit behind it was very much one of acceptance of gays. In my case, it's much more than acceptance--it's a deep love for my friend whom I miss terribly, as well as for the love I currently have for many close gay and lesbian friends. That, at least, is the spirit in which I read this thread and participated in it.

Okay, I'm done. Thanks.
