I'm gonna give ya some culture

In honor of St.Patrick's Day, PLEBA, and LARRY MULLEN JR., the cuture man.

THE BONNY YOUNG IRISH BOY

O first I came a-courted by a bonny young Irish b'y,
He called me all of his jewels, his sweetheart, pride and j'y;
'Twas in fair Dubelin city, a place so old and fair,
Where first I came a-courted by a bonny young Irish b'y.

His cheeks was of the roses and his hair was of the brown
And hung in ringlets heavy to his shoulders hanging down
His teeth was of an ivory white, his eyes was black as sloes;
He'd charm the heart of any fair girl, no matter where he goes.

Long time I keeped him company and hoped to be his bride
But now he is gone and leaved me, across the ocean wide.
Sure I'm afraid some other fair maid, my true love will enj'y
While I'm left here lamenting my bonny young Irish b'y.

So I'll pack all my clothing and in search of him I'll go,
I'll cross the wide, wide ocean through stormy winds and snow
And never shall I marry until the day I die,
So I'll die broken-hearted for my bonny young Irish b'y.

O comrades, I am dying! There's one more word I'll say
Take my bones to Ireland and bury them in the clay,
And write upon my tombstone to children passing by,
That I died broken-hearted for my bonny young Irish b'y.

Post yer Irish poems and songs lassies!

i am not much on poetry myself, but i found this one to be quite nice...

A White Rose

The red rose whispers of passion,
And the white rose breathes of love;
O, the red rose is a falcon,
And the white rose is a dove.

But I send you a cream - white rosebud
With a flush upon its petal tips;
For the love that is purest and sweetest
Has a kiss of desire on the lips.

Well it's cute anyway. This was a song on an old movie, it's kind of a poem.

He's my dear my darling one
my charming and beguiling one
my darling Irish boy!

Oh, I don't remember the rest, something about a good looking Irish guy with nice eyes, reminds me of U2!

found one more...

Down By The Sally Gardens

Down by the sally gardens,
My love and I did meet;
She passed the sally gardens,
With little snow white feet,
She bid me take love easy,
As the leaves grow on the tree,
But I was young and foolish,
With her did not agree.

In a field by the river,
My love and I did stand;
And on my leaning shoulder,
She laid her snow white hand.
She bid me take love easy,
As the grass grows on the weirs;
But I was young and foolish,
And now am full of tears.

William Butler Yeats

Yeats-my absolute favorite poet

When You are Old

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

He wishes for the Cloths of Heaven

Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread upon my dreams.

The last two lines are, I believe, on the gates of Bono's house-don't know if he or someone else put them there. Anyway, I think they're some of the most beautiful words ever put on paper.

Here's an Irish blessing. It's actually normally said at funerals, but it's still very pretty.

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.
