Back on the blue crack after a long break
Bono jumped to his feet and glared, pausing to admire Ria, and returning to the glare.
"Lets go!" Larry said giddily, starting to race down to the pale water
Bono took Rias hand and they followed Edge, running like children.
Letting go of his hand, Ria tossed her body into the water and dove down under a wave, opening her eyes and looking around.

Edges legs stood a little way off.
Bono's legs were just appearing
Larry met her eyes as he dove down after her.
She popped back up to the surface, feeling refreshed in the warm water and making sure her bikini top was still on straight.

Everybody looked at each other, squinting because of the sun glaring off the water.
Ria watched Edge who still hadn't gotten all the way in the water.
he still had his straw hat perched atop the famous bald head, wading around peacefully.

That had to change
Innocently, Ria slid back under the water directly towards Edge, taking his legs out from underneath him as he crashed down into the water.
She darted back up to the surface, heard Bono laughing, and theres was Edge's hat, floating peacefully on the surface.

Ria put on the hat as Edge came back to the surface wiping water from his eyes and coughing.
A sweet smile cam across her face

"Oh, is this your hat?"

He laughed and dove towards her, missing and trying again.
This was the first time Ria had seen him really enjoying himself since she had met him.
Always comcentrating so hard on making the album, he hadn't really been living.
Now he was splashing around in the ocean, laughing, having fun.
It warmed Ria's heart....

Eventually she handed the dripping straw hat back to him, putting it on his head herself a little crooked and apologizing.

Something caught her attention right then.
Something didn't fit with the happy noise of the beach.
Farther off she heard a scream.
There were other screams but this was different.
She looked but didn't see anything.
Nobody in the lifeguard tower.
She waded beack to the edge of the water and looked again.

Then she saw
The person screaming was on the sand now
Older,
hysterical
pointing frantically at the ocean.
Following her arm, Ria looked and saw a small head floating on the surface of the water and an arm thrashing about, then another.
Water droplets splashing and dropping.
The head was moving farther out, already farther than anybody else.
Immediately, on instinct Ria sprinted out to where the lady was still screaming.
The band had no idea what was going on yet, yelling after her to see where she was going.
Images of a memory flashed through her head with every step she took until she hurtled out to sea and swam with all her power.
Memories-
much colder water than this.....
she swam farther out, suddenly being picked up by a current and pushed towards what she could see was a little boy.
Maybe 5 or 6, desperately trying to stay afloat and beginning to fail.
Just as he began to sink below the surface Ria grabbed him around the waist and pulled him close to her.

"You're gonna be fine" she gasped
"Just hang onto me okay" The boy was sobbing and didn't say anything as he clung to her side as hard as he could.

Knowing they were in danger as long as she kept them in the current, pushing them farther out still, she swam hard to her left to get out of it.
Her arms were free to swim, that boy was not letting go of her body.
"Get on my back"
She was already losing energy fast, fighting to get out of the ripping current and into the waves that would carry them to shore.
None of the sounds from shore reached her ears, just the breathing of the little boy on her back, holding on with his small arms.
Out of danger, she relaxed for a second in calmer water, looking up to see how far out they were.
She groaned, reajusting her little passenger a bit, whispering calm words to him- but maybe more for herself.
He couldnt have weighed much but at the moment he felt like a cement block
"were gonna be fine, okay little guy, lets go back home."

Swimming again, she let the waves urge them back to the shore where she could see a big gathering, including a lifeguard and her best friends.
The grip around her ribs was beginning to hurt, but she didn't ask him to let go, maybe it was her own lungs that were hurting.

Trembling, the boy held on for his life, mixing in with Ria's shaking fatigue.
As they came nearer to shore she mustered all the energy she had and swam, feeling her body begin to give out under the strain.
People were running out to them now, dragging them to sand.

As everything began to fade she could hear shouting all around

feel the fingers of the little boy digging into her skin.
Somebody was trying to pry him away with no success.
Proabably the mother....
Ria put her arms around him too, slipping away into unconscious exhaustion.....
