Walk On

And love
Is not the easy thing
The only baggage
That you can bring
Not the easy thing
The only baggage you can bring
Is all that you can't leave behind

And if the darkness is to keep us apart
And if the daylight feels like it's a long way off
And if your glass heart should crack
And for a second you turn back
Oh no, be strong

Walk on
Walk on
What you got, they can't steal it
No they can't even feel it

Walk on
Walk on
Stay safe tonight

You're packing a suitcase for a place
None of us has been
A place that has to be believed
To be seen

You could have flown away
A singing bird
In an open cage
Who will only fly
Only fly for freedom

Walk on
Walk on
What you got
You can't deny it
Can't sell it or buy it

Walk on
Walk on
You stay safe tonight

And I know it aches
How your heart it breaks
You can only take so much

Walk on
Walk on

Home
Hard to know what it is
If you never had one

Home
I can't say where it is
But I know I'm going

Home
That's where the hurt is

And I know it aches
And your heart it breaks
You can only take so much
Walk on

Leave it behind
You've got to leave it behind

All that you fashion
All that you make
All that you build
All that you break

All that you measure
All that you feel
All this you can leave behind

All that you reason
All that you care

It's only time
And I'll never fill up all I find

All that you sense
All that you scheme
All you dress up
And all that you see

All you create
All that you wreck
All that you hate

Personally, this is my favourite. It's very symbolic. The setting is sparse. The theme focuses on what we really need and what we don't. It's an anthem for all those who've reached a crisis.Walk On...indeed, doesn't everyone at some point.

My favorite U2 song:

"Angel Of Harlem"

It was a cold and wet December day
When we touched the ground at JFK
Snow was melting on the ground
On BLS I heard the sound
Of an angel

New York, like a Christmas tree
Tonight this city belongs to me
Angel

Soul love...this love won't let me go
So long...Angel of Harlem

Birdland on fifty-three
The street sounds like a symphony
We got John Coltrane and a love supreme
Miles says she's got to be an angel

Lady Day got diamond eyes
She sees the truth behind the lies
Angel

Soul love...this love won't let me go
So long...Angel of Harlem
Angel of Harlem

She says it's heart...heart and soul...
Yeah yeah...(yeah)
Yeah yeah...(right now)

Blue light on the avenue
God knows they got to you
An empty glass, the lady sings
Eyes swollen like a bee sting

Blinded you lost your way
Through the side streets and the alleyway
Like a star exploding in the night
Falling to the city in broad daylight

An angel in Devil's shoes
Salvation in the blues
You never looked like an angel
Yeah yeah...Angel of Harlem

Angel...Angel of Harlem...
[Repeat and fade]

**********

This is the song that really started introducing me to U2-if I hadn't heard it and decided to put it and some other U2 songs I'd liked on a CD I was making, I don't know if I'd be a U2 fan at this time.

And the song is just a really neat song. I love the horns in there, I love the image it conjurs (Christmastime in New York City...that's just a perfect image for someone who loves winter), the lyrics are great, and you can't help but just belt out the whole "Angel in the devil's shoes, salvation in the blues...", etc., bit when it comes up.

It's a song I can never get sick of. Granted, that's how I feel about a lot of U2's songs, but this one just holds a special place in my heart, so...:).

And hey, it doesn't hurt that one of my nicknames is in the title, either. ;).

So yeah, there's my pick.

Angela

There are too many to pick :sigh: I have so many songs and so many reasons. NYD and SBS, my first loves, and so many good songs through the years! Is this your favorite to listen to, or because of the lyrics? My favorites to listen to are Streets, IGC, RHMT, Heartland, Ultraviolet and Beautiful Day. If I had to pick one that had lyrics that were special to me, it would be Stay and Electrical Storm. Oh, and One! Okay, I'd better stop now before I start making a list :reject:

What about a memory arw9797?

Just imagine back to a special moment in your life, when a U2 song was been played...could have been at a concert, or even something as simple as driving on the freeway on a gorgeous day.

It is rather difficult to just pinpoint one. But each fan takes a different interpretation from each and every song. I could honestly say that if someone else selects "Walk On" then nothing is more certain that how I interpret and feel about it will differ from their perspective on it.

So, please, try again arw9797. I bet there is one song with special and personal meaning to you!!

Thanks U2Kitten and Moonlit-Angel. Fabulous!

My favorites are One and Bad

I really can't put into words why they are

 Me too! One was one of the first U2 songs I ever heard, and I've always loved it. As I've gotten older, the lyrics have had more meaning, but I can't really explain why. It just... works.

Bad was my first favorite U2 song, mostly 'cuz I loved the lyrics. It's just an awesome song.

40 is another one of my faves, I just love that one. Whenever I listen to War, I always play 40 a few times in a row before I shut the cd off

Oh God, there are so many.... I couldn't even make a top 20 the other time in EYKIW threads, but "One" was always #1 on any of the lists so I think that would make it my Favourite!..... It's just such an amazing song and I love the entire concept of all the videos (especially the one with "One" in different languages) and the lyrics......no matter how many times I hear it!

so here's to "One".....Cheers

Is it getting better
Or do you feel the same
Will it make it easier on you now
You got someone to blame
You say...

One love
One life
When it's one need
In the night
One love
We get to share it
Leaves you baby if you
Don't care for it

Did I disappoint you
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
Well it's...

Too late
Tonight
To drag the past out into the light
We're one, but we're not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other
One...

Have you come here for forgiveness
Have you come to raise the dead
Have you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head

Did I ask too much
More than a lot
You gave me nothing
Now it's all I got
We're one
But we're not the same
Well we
Hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt

One love
One blood
One life
You got to do what you should
One life
With each other
Sisters
Brothers
One life
But we're not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other

One...life

One

Ok since you put it that way...I'm not saying this is my favorite song. It's just the one that has the most meaning for me. I've only been a U2 fan for a few years. I had a lot of negative stuff going on in my life before I found U2, and shortly after. I really needed something to help me through what was going on and I didn't know where to turn. The minute I heard Bono utter the words "don't let the bastards grind you down" in Acrobat I knew at that instant that U2 was my favorite band in the world and that I was going to get through everything ok. And I did. There's actually a lot of lines in that song that I love.

Have you ever listened to a song, any song, it doesn't have to be a U2 song, and felt they are singing it to you? That's never really happened to me before but it did with this song. Then about 6 months later ATYCLB came out and I heard Stuck in a Moment. Little did I know then that it was written for the singer of one of my favorite bands growing up. I just took those two songs and ran with them and I got through everything just fine. I actually have a hard time listening to either of those songs now. But when I'm down and need to be reminded of a few things I listen to them, especially Acrobat, and I feel fine.

So for you Hanover...I'll say Acrobat has the most meaning to me.

Don't believe what you hear
Don't believe what you see
If you just close your eyes
You can feel the enemy
When I first met you girl
You had fire in your soul
What happened your face
Of melting in snow ?
Now it looks like this!

And you can swallow
Or you can spit
You can throw it up
Or choke on it
And you can dream
So dream out loud
You know that your time is coming 'round
So don't let the bastards grind you down

No, nothing makes sense
Nothing seems to fit
I know you'd hit out
If you only knew who to hit
And I'd join the movement
If there was one I could believe in
Yeah I'd break bread and wine
If there was a church I could receive in
'Cos I need it now

To take a cup
To fill it up
To drink it slow
I can't let you go

And I must be
An acrobat
To talk like this
And act like that
And you can dream
So dream out loud
And don't let the bastards grind you down

Oh, it hurts baby
What are we going to do now it's all been said ?
No new ideas in the house, and every book has been read

And I must be
An acrobat
To talk like this
And act like that
And you can dream
So dream out loud
And you can find
Your own way out
And you can build
And I can will
And you can call
I can't wait until
And you can stash
And you can seize
In dreams begin
Responsibilities
And I can love
And I can love
But I know that the tide is turning 'round
So don't let the bastards grind you down

I think I don't really have a fave song... it depends on when you ask me I'll tell you one song or another. Now I can't stop listening to Lady with the spinning head, but that doesn't mean it is my absolutely favourite.

But if I had to pick one... I will very probably choose a live version of One.

are many

I don't know... maybe:

Gone, Wire, Acrobat, Tomorrow, Exit... I Will Follow, The Fly, Where The Streets Have No Name, One, Mofo, In God's Country, Walk On, Lemon, Fire, Rejoice, New Year's Day, Drowning Man, Lady With The Spinning Head, Treasure (Whatever Happened To Pete The Chop?), Spanish Eyes, The Ground Beneath Her Feet.... whatever!

those of always are Gone and Wire
because... I don't know, Gone seems me perfect and with Wire I identify myself

One of my favorites is "In A Little While"

It's such a sweet little song and when played live, Bono and Edge's harmonies together are amazing. It also has a very awesome bass line.

This song holds a special place for me personally because at the show on 5-15-01 in Chicago, Edge started playing the opening guitar riff, stopped right in front of me and looked down. I didn't know what to do, so I shyly waved up at him and he smiled back at me. :cute:

The song can be forgotten sometimes on All That You Can't Leave Behind, but the live version takes on a whole new life, I think anyway.

In a little while
Surely you'll be mine
In a little while I'll be there

In a little while
This hurt will hurt no more
I'll be home, love

When the night takes a deep breath
And the daylight has no air
If I crawl, if I come crawling home
WiIl you be there

In a little while
I won't (be) blown by every breeze
Friday night running
To Sunday on my knees

That girl, that girl
She's mine
And I've know her since

Since you were a little girl
With Spanish eyes
Oh, when I saw her
In a pram they pushed her by

My, how you've grown
Well it's been
It's been a little while

Slow down my beating heart
Man dreams one day to fly
A man takes a rocket ship into the skies
He lives on a star that's dying in the night
And follows in the trail
The scatter of light

Turn it on
Turn it on
You turn me on

Slow down my beating heart
Slowly, slowly love
Slow down my beating heart
Slowly, slowly love
Slow down my beating heart
Slowly, slowly love

GOD, this is the most difficult decision I've ever had to make lol

So many, not enough memory.

"Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad"

That song defines my life...

Thanks to arw9797 for that! :)

sure! I forgot Two Shots Of Happy One Shot Of Sad...
is wonderful! I  it

BD like my Vitamin E

My most meaningful song that lifts me up when I'm at my down:

Beautiful Day!

The heart is a bloom, shoots up through stony ground
But there's no room, no space to rent in this town
You're out of luck and the reason that you had to care
The traffic is stuck and you're not moving anywhere
You thought you'd found a friend to take you out of this place
Someone you could lend a hand in return for grace

I never understood this really but what happened after my pc went up in smoke I understood.

It's a beautiful day / (Day) Down
Sky falls, you feel like it's a beautiful day / (Day) Down
Don't let it get away / (Day)

You're on the road but you've got no destination
You're in the mud, in the maze of her imagination
You love this town even if that doesn't ring true
You've been all over and it's been all over you

After it I was deep into a blue funk and it seemed like nothing could make me feel any better.

It's a beautiful day / (Day) Down
Don't let it get away / (Day) Day
It's a beautiful day, woo hoo hoo / (Day) Down, (Day) Down

Touch me, take me to that other place
Teach me love, I know I'm not a hopeless case

Everything you can learn a lesson from. Failure is feedback.

See the world in green and blue
See China right in front of you
See the canyons broken by a cloud
See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out
See the bedouin fires at night
See the oil fields at first light
And, see the bird with a leaf in her mouth
After the flood all the colours came out
(Day) Down
(Day) Day

This is corny but after not spending that much time on the computer, I got to see things as they were... in stereo and in full color. It was beautiful.

It was a beautiful day / (Day) Down
Don't let it get away / (Day) Day
Beautiful day / (Day) Down, (Day) Down

Touch me, take me to that other place
Please me, I know I'm not a hopeless case

What you don't have you don't need it now
What you don't know you can feel it somehow
What you don't have you don't need it now
You don't need it now, don't need it now
Was a beautiful day

Like most interpretations, Beautiful Day is about a man who's been down but still looks on the bright side of things. I listen to this song and it gives me such an inspiration. I look at life at a different angle when one aspect has been dimmed. As I lost an outlet of my life, which was my computer... it had everything I owned in it, I had to find other means to do things. I learned from it. Failure is feedback and Beautiful Day helps fuel a realization of that.

... and that's my song

For me it's With or Without You. It was the first U2 song I ever heard, and it absolutely floored me. I had never heard anything so beautiful and haunting from a rock band before. And when I listen to it now, 16 years later, it still gives me goosebumps. Sometimes I listen to songs like One or Pride or Streets or Bad and I think "that's their best ever," but then I listen to WOWY and I think "Nah, it's still my favorite."

.

"With Or Without You" is definitely in my top 10 U2 songs...I think that may be my second favorite one by them.

And Edgette, ah, "In A Little While" is definitely a great song-one of my personal favorites from them. Every time I hear it, I always get a smile on my face-the song never, ever fails to do that to me.

And that's a really cool story you shared, too!

Angela

You guys and ladies are brilliant. Thank you so much for making such a difficult decision and singling out that special song/songs.

After all, it is the lyrics and music of U2 that unites us, so obviously they are worth talking about.

Thank you arw9797. I was so taken by your choice.

Keep them coming...

U2 SING FOR US!!!

That pic is sooooo cooolll Hanover
my fav song is one is the first song I heard from U2 without really know it was U2 or so but I liked it imediately
and walk on because I could do an essay about ann san suu kyi (who is now back in housearrest*mad*)and I playes the song in my class

Ohhh, such a tough choice.

Right now, I'd say With or Without You. It's so underrated, in my opinion, and gets a bit left behind by the other songs from JT. I heard a *terrible* version of it, by some hopeless band, on the movie "Looking for Alibrandi," and it just made me appreciate U2's efforts more. It is so beautiful, but it's sad too. I like the fact that the lyrics are very vague, so it can mean different things at different times.

I suppose I go through U2 phases, of liking certain songs. Now, along with WOWY, I'm constantly listening to Sweetest Thing, Pride, Tomorrow, New York, Ultraviolet, Do you feel loved, Drowning Man, Mysterious Ways ... well, you see my dilemma, right? So many great songs!

I love this song. It helped me get through last year :up: and on the Boston DVD, when Edge sings the last part - it gets me every time

me too

I'd say my absolute favorites are With or Without You and Love is Blindness... because, I don't know, those are songs that I would have written if I could write songs, you know? :eeklaugh:

But with so many great songs, I'd say I have a weekly favorite... Right now, I'm really digging TTTYAATW, which is a song I didn't appreciate too much in the past.

It's so hard to choose! I think I'd say Always, it's so raw in a way that I love, I don't know.

In A Little While is my fav out of All That You Can't Live Behind, specialy live. Edge's voice and that bass... it's like a dream

It seems like I have a different favorite U2 song everyday. But I'd have to say that Walk On has special meaning for me right now, since I'm graduating from high school in three days.
