...if God will send his angels...

yeah, that's from the Bill Flanagan book - around that time, Bono had been reading books like In Cold Blood and stuff by Raymond Chandler(?) and some other deep stuff, and he was also very angry over what was going on in South America (where he and Ali had visited), not to mention everything going on in Ireland as well....and he sort of let it all come out his fingertips.

He asked Bill F. what he thought of the lyrics, and Bill said while he thought they were great, that people would pretty much forget everything after the thing about the 3-year old, because it was such a brutal mental picture, so Bono opted not to use it for whatever the purpose.

It is very sad and harsh, but it certainly does make you *think*, and I think that's the very reason Bono writes the lyrics he does.

In Cold Blood

What's it going to be, Lord, fire or flood
An act of mercy or in cold blood?

very very sad piece.

In Cold Blood

I read a book once, called "In Cold Blood"
About a murder in the neighborhood
Pages of facts did me no good
I read it like a blind man, in cold blood
So the story of a three-year-old child
Raped by soldiers though she'd already died
Made the mother watch as they defiled her in the mud
I'm reading the story now in cold blood
More now coming off the wire
City surrounded, funeral pyre
Life is cheaper than talking about it
People choke on their politicians' vomit
On cable television I saw a woman weep
Live by satellite, from a flood-ridden street
Boy mistaken for a wastepaper bin
Body that a child used to live in
I saw plastic explosives and an alarm clock
And the wrong men sitting in the dock
Karma is a word I never understood
How God could take a four-year-old in cold blood
I live by a beach but it feels like New York
I hear about ten murders before I get to work
What's it going to be, Lord, fire or flood
An act of mercy or in cold blood?

very very sad piece.

Reading this made me feel so sad. I am so glad that I was fortunate enough to grow up in a safe country like canada. Poor Bono. He has seen so much in his life.

You won't live any longer,

Does the Flannagan book has this one also??

Found it! In "Outside Is America: U2 in the U.S." by Carter Alan.

Dreams in a Box

The Chicago Peace Museum is dreams in a box
Some come true, some to be realized
Yet...we know that peace is a living thing
That cannot be put in a place, contained
That it is not the absence of war
That it does not bow down to Marx or Lenin, Reagan or Thatcher
That it is not infected by hypodermic needles
And yet it must infect us with a cure, contagious.

Peace will not prosper while the poor are controlled in ghettos
Cornered by color or greed
From Watts to Harlem, Belfast to Beirut
We must find new solutions to new problems.

The Chicago Peace Museum is a building
put up and run by men and women who believe
that peace does not exist by itself
that it is/will be brought into being by people
That is must be taught in classrooms as well as churches
As street lever as well as the negotiating table
By businessmen as well as artists.

I am a word writer...but it is actions
man-made and concrete
that we need...

We see love torn down
Begin the rebuilding.

---Bono
