....is going to play at the metallica tribute. yes yes, this is a silly thing to talk about, but come ON! avril! *shudders* as contrived as britney...selling to little 10 year old girls by the millions. acting like something she is not.gross. anybody feel the same way? and just in case- if this thread is closed, i'm sorry i started it- i don't mean for this to be offensive (how can it be!?)

Gah, me hates avril. She doesn't even know who Chrissy Hynde is. I mean, COME ON! If you're an alleged "punk", you should know who the most influential woman in alternative music is. *hits avril with strat, that I can actually play!*

I am by no means a fan, but she is hardly Britney. She writes her own songs and plays her own guitar. She is not trying to pretend to be something she is not, and as a matter of fact, she HATES people like that. She wrote the song "Complicated" about just that. Her fans aren't all 10 year old girls. Her songs are played regularly on adult contemporary stations. So give her a break, even if you don't like her. To tell you the truth, I'd rather see her than Metallica. I was never much of a fan, but I tolerated them until Lars had a big part in the killing of Napster. So Metallica :madspit:

I have a whole lotta respect for Metallica... I don't own any of their cds, but my brother is a big fan and... wait, this is an avril thread.

Avril is such a faker.
She's all like "look at me! I'm wearing a tie! I'm different!" and then all her music sounds exactly like everything else being played.
I prefer her over britney and christina, though.

aye, i see what you are saying :hmm: also, i put in the metallica fact because of the stark constrast of the two genres, and eh...forget about it ^_^

Not much of an Avril fan...but a friend of mine made up a funny parody of "I'm With You", so now we always listen to that song so he can sing along with his words. :lmao:

My exact thoughts.

Except, I don't prefer her over the other two. I hate all of them.

And I think people give her too much credit for writing her own stuff. Yeah, she does. And it sucks all the same.

:lmao: at a metallica tribute!?

*can't wait to hear reports of her and her ska8ter boi 'band' getting booo-ed off the stage*

Really, how do you know she's 'faking?' Maybe she really likes dressing like that, how do we know? One thing she does do is try so hard to distinguish herself from Christina and Britney, so even though I don't like her music much it makes me sad to see her lumped in with them by people who don't even like her or know enough about her to know what she's thinking, sorry. I just think it's an unfair assumption and she deserves the benefit of the doubt.

I don't know why I'm even defending her. I'm not much of a fan at all, it's just the principle I guess. If you hate her for what she is, fine, but don't hate her for being like Britney, cause she's not, or for trying to prove she's different. All she can do is try, poor thing.

Check out her 'fuck' belt at a Dublin concert last month:

Maybe she does like to look different, but if her image is about being different from the bubblegum pop, she needs to SOUND different. Which she does not.

To me, at least.

She also doesnt know how to pronounce David Bowie's last name:lol:

She may write her own songs, but the lyrics are so lame.

she is only trying to be different because thats what is selling now. She only Co- writes her songs. And if she was really punk..would she have perfectly strait hair? tuned voice? contrived outfits? Uh no. it's sad she tries so hard and still sucks.

I'm gonna disagree with the majority here

When I was in high school and bored in my classes, I used to scribble down lyrics and have melodies for them going through my head. I have a whole binder full of "songs" that will never see the light of day, simply because I don't play any instruments.

Anyway, whether or not I like their music, I've always admired young people in the music business, especially if they write their own material (and who cares if it's co-written? How many other adult artists have co-written songs with others at one point or another?)... Maybe it's because I have a binder full of songs collecting dust in my attic  but I've always enjoyed seeing new teens in the music business. I personally feel that a lot of them get a bad rap simply because of their age.

I think a lot of young people, period, don't get enough credit for what they're capable of...

I dunno, I give Avril credit for her musical efforts. Her album may not be what I'm "into" in terms of music, but I still think it's quite an accomplishment for a girl her age.

lame lyrics, yes. that ska8er boi thing speaks for itself.

 how do you miss pronounce bowie? bawie? booowie? :bow :ie?

ooooh I forgot

Remember when she performed at the Grammy Awards a little bit ago?

Remember how awful it was?
Even my roommate who only likes rap noticed that crappiness.

This got me thinking.

Trust me, not much does these days.

I don't like her ... why?

She's:

Fake ... how do I know?
Not that talented ... okay, give her a break, lots of ppl seem to like her.
She's ignorant ... I bet lots of male rock stars are ignorant and no one jumps all over them.
Just as bad as britney ... come on, NOTHING is as bad as britney.

Then it hit me.

I don't like her music or her performances because she's broken what even Bono says is the cardinal rule of being a rock star ...

She's kind of ... boring.

Lame? No way! Have you ever even listened to Sk8r Boi? It tells a cool story! There's a girl who is a snooty ballet dancer and she dumps her boyfriend because he's into skating and wearing sloppy clothes and he isn't good enough for her. She marries another guy, and 5 years later sees him as a big star on MTV! She realizes there was more to him that what she saw, more inside, and is sorry she missed out. Avril is playing the part of the new girlfriend, telling her she missed out and it was too late. I especially love the last line:

"Now I'm with the Sk8r Boi, I said see ya later boy, under the stage after the show, I'll be at the studio, singing a song we wrote, about a girl you used to know!"

so it was all brought full circle. I love it. Peppy and fun to drive to, too.

 how do you miss pronounce bowie? bawie? booowie? :bow :ie?

In America, it's Bowie (rhymes with Joey)

In Britain, it's Bowie (rhymes with Woweee!)

So neither is actually considered incorrect. If she pronounced it the British way, that's understandable since she's Canadian and of French decent.

Bowie isn't even his real name. It's David Jones. He changed it in 1966 to avoid confusion with the Monkee's Davey Jones. Bowie's son took back the family name after he grew up. He was born Zowie Bowie, but is now Joe Jones, the computer specialist.

Before the Grammy's aired, avril was announcing the nominees for I dont know what catagory but when she said David Bowie's last name she pronounced it Boweee, rhyming with Wowee like Sapphire said. Anyway when she was corrected she told a guy that was interviewing her " like wasent he famous before I was born?" I saw this on Entertainment tonight.

I just don't see what's so LAME about her lyrics. There are much, much worse. I like Sk8er Boi and Complicated, they both have a cool message. There might be some lame stuff but even U2 has had some lame lyrics. Remember 'chewing bubble gum/lovey dovey stuff' 'mole digging in a hole' 'boy called Trampoline' 'boomcha' 'whambam' 'there's a late late show where I can grow' Of course U2 is way better, but I just can't stand to see her work totally disregarded as all junk.
