U2 does use tapes, backing sounds, and all the rest. however, I saw underneath while shooting the boston show and it looks like Dallas uses simple guitar samplers (basically recording what edge did 4 seconds ago, and replaying it later in the song). That's why sometimes edge really focuses on a key passage just so bad notes aren't echoed again later in the verse...
