Are you sure about that? Axver wrote that they ended early and had a really long encore. And Axver is the setlist God so.....

Were you there?

From the reports here, it seems the band left the stage after One, and so Zoo Station and the eight songs that followed it count as a really long encore ... or really just two sets, one of 12 songs and one of 9.

Honestly, I was mystified when reports came through. Those posted on the Anaheim I Setlist Watch and Thread Party said the band left the stage between One and Zoo Station, so I guess the last nine songs can be counted as a long encore.

I'm still not sure about calling the last 9 songs an encore, but that's how it's listed on u2-vertigo-tour.com simply because that's how we do the format! I guess it's more like two sets.

There really wasn't what you'd call a proper encore. After One, Bono simply said "Give us a few minutes" and the band members hurried off stage. They weren't anywhere near the end of the show at that point. After 40, the lights were off for a good 2 minutes and then they brought the house lights up. People were expecting an encore at that point and booed when they didn't get it.

after 40, the lights were down for at least 5 minutes! i really thought that we would get an encore, you could see people behind the stage running around and stuff. i guess the band just didn't have anything to play to end the show better than 40

Honestly, my impression was that they just wanted to get off stage and give it another go tomorrow night. There were a few miscues during the show and while I won't go so far as saying the set was bad, it certainly was uneven.

If that was an "encore" it was shortest one I ever saw, I never even knew they left the stage. I thought it was one straight through show, I had no idea they left. It wasn't long enough to even sit down whatever it was.

What did you all think of the cat woman?

Lady Macphisto? She looked like she was out for attention in the GA line, but I saw her talking to lots of people before the show. Seemed very friendly. And she really went for it when she got up there.

Bono went over to her three times before he pulled her up. He loved her get-up.

the set was really fast paced -- no band intro or breaks or anything, just the break after One and that's it. very high-energy

the tour is about to kick off ;) infact, we could end up saying it is one of the best

Traditional encore in San Diego?

I'm curious about this encore mix-up. Did they do a "traditional" encore in San Diego, i.e., say goodnight, leave stage, return after raucous applause?

It would be very interesting to hear the band's comments on this. Maybe they are going to the 2 set format. I was there and know that we didn't realize the band left after One. There wasn't the traditional stomping for them to come out

after One, the lights went down and Bono said something like "give us a couple minutes" and the lights were off for a bit (of course the crowd was going wild). i can't remember if they showed anything during the break, but the band did come back with Zoo Station. . . it was fabulous, though some people around me weren't able to recognize the song

edit:

after Vertigo, the band looked like they were ready to leave the stage, waving and everything, then Bono did that thing he did at Slane where he told each of the guys to stay on stage, and they continuted on with All Because of You. The set was very fast paced, no breaks between the songs besides after One. I really think they wanted to do an encore after 40, but there's nothing you can play after 40!

They showed a plea for involvement with some cause(I can't recall what it was called), and showed a # and website on the screen above the stage. And they had the audio over the speakers repeating the "Everybody...Everybody...Everybody" into which has been used to open the shows.

Were you on the floor, Kevin??? did you see the fight break out? the two guys and the one girl??? it was during the break between bands...we were on level 4 row 3 but we were looking straight down on the GA..relatively good seats...but the fight went on and on and on....

wow details. I went outside so didn't see it. It was very, very crowded on that floor last nite, and I do not see how anybody in the back of the floor or even stuck in the middle of it, had a good time, but for $49.50 it's probably possible.

As for "KOL" all of their songs sounded exactly the same. You get no feel for a song because you can't understand a thing, it's just like a bunch of guys in a garage driving the neighborhood crazy, because I'm used to people who can really play guitar at concerts, not someone strumming making it as loud as possible with no real playing. Plus that lead singer one had a terrible voice. I am surprised U2 has them open. I wish they would have had the Killers or someone else. I won't go to see them again, I'll not go into the show until like 8:30 pm. U2 comes on at 9 pm. It's also amazing how the only people really there were the ones making sure they had the railing and for inside the ellipse. You would think it was a sparsely attended concert, no one comes in until way after 8:30 pm. I won't either from now on.

Hey Rick. Nope, I wasn't on the floor. I was sitting on the terrace level, dead center in front of the band and two rows in. Not bad considering I bought the ticket at the last minute for $40.....heheh.

I saw the brawl. It went on for what seemed like more than a full minute and people were getting pushed all over the place. Pretty ugly. I saw the guy and girl being escorted out but I didn't realize the girl was fighting. The guy was pretty big and he threw a hard punch at someone.

The fight was not far from where I was, but I couldn't see anything from my spot on the floor. Too many heads in the way. What happened?

I don't know how it started but we looked down and saw two guys throwing serious punches. There was NO security at all and every time someone in the crowd would pull them apart, they would go at it again. The smaller guy's girlfriend eventually got involved and she was kicking and punching the bigger guy and taking swings at anyone who tried to stop her. It was REALLY ugly. I've never seen anything like that at a U2 show.

After what seemed like forever, security finally noticed and pulled the bigger guy away and it looked like he needed medical attention. They guy and girl were escorted out right below us and eventually the other guy was too.

I can't imagine spending all day in the GA line only to get in a fight and miss the whole show. Idiots :|

I think they were having some technical difficulties last night. I watch with binoculars as they scrambled around on and back stage. If you noticed, edge had some prpblems in the beginning and Bono had them through-out the show. Bono kept yelling to a technician in one of the cat-walks periodically about something. i think that may have had something do do with the odd goings on with the set, etc. I am curiosu to see if anythign is mentioned about it.

A few other notes: that punk-rock chick was great stuff. Saw her before the show and just had a feeling she was goign to be involved somehow. I give her loads of credit - she got up there and danced like a pro. Bono worked the situation perfectly (as usual).

Saw the fight too. Thougth about running down and trying to get their tickets as they were getting booted. I was stuck in nosebleeds.

Great to see them again. I got chills at the opening. Just curious as to what was going on with the mysterious 'problems'.

Yeah, I noticed some of that too. Edge's mic cut out completely during his part in Miracle Drug and it sounded like Bono's was fading in and out at times too.

There was no encore last night.

I don't care what regulars say as they refer to set lists

The show did not end, band leave stage and crowd applaud and hope and get reward of encore songs.

Also no introduction of band members.

Regardless the sold out area loved the show

There was grumbling about no encore in the parking lot, though

The song ended with Bono saying, "Thank you, give us a couple of minutes."

After a short break, the band returned to the stage to play a second set that was more like part two than encore. "Zoo Station" opened this new section, with Edge walking the ellipse alone and letting rip that fantastic, charging guitar line that opened the "Achtung Baby" album. Like Monday, Edge sported the Madonna headset to provide his backing vocals. For his part, Bono made up all new lyrics for the song, getting his inspiration from members of the GA crowd, including one person who handed him a lily.

......

Bono left the stage after hanging something on his mic stand, possibly the rosary beads he received from the Pope. Adam and Edge followed and then Larry did a quick drum solo before taking his final bow.

The lights were left off for a long time and the crowd got restless, expecting the band to return to the stage. No one moved and soon a round of boos filled the arena. Thankfully, the crowd didn’t get too nasty before the lights were turned on and everyone began filing out.

I don't think I've seen a live version of Miracle Drug yet where during Edge's verse his mic didn't cut out -- and that includes Brooklyn and the L.A. Rehearsal. Or perhaps he isn't singing directly into the mic at times, I dunno. I wish they'd get that worked out, though.

And I agree with deep. There was. no. encore. last night. That's a simple fact.

I realize that this is a thread about encore/no encore (IMO, they had one very long encore after about a two minute break), but since the fight on the floor was mentioned...

The fight occurred right next me. It was over someone getting pissed off about saving spots for people on the floor. It went on FOREVER...security took their sweet time getting there. In the beginning, it was pushing, shoving, a few punches, then we fans separated them. Then in an instant, it started all up again. I saw one guy actually punch the girl, and (bless her heart) she went ballistic. At one point, they were on the ground at my feet, and she was kicking the hell out of the dude. Finally, security showed up and tossed them all out.

You never like to see shit like this, but it basically "parted the sea" and allowed me to me move right up to the base of the ellipse (I know, selfish bastard).
