THE wait is over. The biggest band in the world, U2, opened the Australian component of its long-awaited Vertigo Tour in spectacular fashion in Brisbane last night.

The immense audio-visual spectacle on the stage alone was extraordinary in size, and took some time to adjust to.

The American rapper Kanye West, who came with a string section, harpist and DJ, battled to win the crowd through his solid set. Even his big hit Gold Digger washed over the Queensland crowd, thousands who had queued all day to gain a spot in the Vertigo pit near centre stage.

It was the Irish rock legends the 45,000-strong crowd were here to see, and they were hardly disappointed.

While fans may sympathise with the pet causes of the irrepressible front man Bono, last night it was all about the band's stunning arsenal of songs.

After the band opened with the unmistakable riffs of the beanie-clad guitarist The Edge, Bono appeared on one of two catwalks 25 metres into the crowd as U2 began the song City Of Blinding Lights.

After some initial sound hiccups they launched into Vertigo with gusto. Bono then led the crowd in a bizarre dance he called "the sun flower".

After Elevation, the Achtung Baby album track The End Of The World was an early and interesting curio that seemed to surprise the crowd.

Soaring readings of the classics New Year's Day, Beautiful Day and Walk On removed any crowd apathy.

They were the first of a swag of seminal pop hits the band played through an impressive show.

Fans who had waited nine years for the band's arrival were exultant.

The night's most moving moment came when Bono took off his omnipresent sunglasses and dedicated the song Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own to his father, Bob, who died recently.

As rehearsals indicated the band have included a few extra songs from All That You Can’t Leave Behind in expense for a couple of songs from How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. Also, the concert marks the first time the band have performed the Saints Are Coming without Greenday. That aside, the setlist is fairly similar to what the ROW saw in 2005 and early 2006

Will they stick to playing 21 songs all the way through the tour or will they increase their set??
