Without much in the way of official and confirmed news on the new album (other than that is has been lost and/or stolen in France, and is presumably due in November 2004), U2 fans the world over are left to ponder and endlessly debate what little morsels of information we have about the next world tour. There will be one, and it will most likely start in Miami sometime in March 2005 - that?s all we know, folks!

But isn?t it fun to discuss? Isn?t there a certain amount of joy in the lack of details? It creates such a dramatic build up. Where will they tour? Will they hit Australia and South America again? Will there be another ?heart? setup with general admission seating? Luckily, as recent rumors have indicated, fans can look forward to more hours of camping out with fellow U2 fans to score those desired up-front-and-center and so-close-you-can-see-how-blue-Bono?s-eyes-are vantage points.

Recently, a long discussion on the Interference.com message boards tackled the ponderous task of brainstorming who should and will be hired to perform the illustrious task of being U2?s opening act next year. In the past, U2 has favored female-fronted bands and performers such as No Doubt, fellow Irish group The Corrs, Nelly Furtado, Garbage and label mate PJ Harvey. Remarkably, most posters agreed more often than they disagreed on who should fill this difficult roll of warming up an arena full of passionate and hungry U2 fans. However, U2 fans are an open-minded, music-loving bunch, and generally attempt to enjoy the band U2 has hired, usually reasoning, ?If U2 likes them, they must be good!? Preferential openers include (along with all of the previous Elevation tour opening acts): Detroit rockers The White Stripes, The Tea Party, Snow Patrol, Jet, recently reunited 90s alt-rock faves The Pixies (who opened up a few dates on ZooTV), The Thrills and Keane.

Here now are my picks for the opening slot on U2?s next worldwide jaunt:

The Raveonettes
Hailing from Denmark, The Raveonettes? two principal players, Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo, bring with them a current music anomaly, in-tandem vocals paired with noisy guitar work and sometimes dark lyrics that would not be out of place on ?Achtung Baby.? Already critical darlings just a few years into their career, the Raveonettes would make an exciting, edgy opening act. For trivia: like U2, the Raveonettes share a deep interest in American music, notably Johnny Cash, to whom they would dedicate their twang-y and heart-wrenching ballad ?Love Will Destroy Everything? from their full-length debut album ?Chain Gang of Love? every night during their 2003 tour after the legendary Man In Black had passed away. PJ Harvey
Though she has already opened for U2 on the Zooropa and Elevation tours, label mate and fellow Principle Management client PJ Harvey made quite an impression on fickle U2 audiences in 2001 with songs from her 2000 release ?Stories From the City, Stories From The Sea,? her most accessible record to date. Now with a new critically-lauded record out, ?Uh Huh Her,? Harvey would seem like a clear candidate to once again play to the throngs, and quite possibly, make up those Florida shows she missed during the Elevation tour launch in Sunrise, Florida. Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Critical darling phenoms from New York City, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, led by charismatic frontwoman Karen O., have scored themselves a hit with their droning, love sick tune ?Maps? from their latest album ?Fever To Tell.? If their recent performance at the MTV Movie Awards, and a growing reputation as one of the finest live rock acts is anything to go by, this unpredictable three-piece could very well be a sure thing, if Bono?s rumored taste for ?garage rock? holds any water. Fiona Apple
Rumored to have a newly completed album, ?Extraordinary Machine,? gathering dust on the shelves while record label Sony Music searches for a single, Fiona Apple has not released an album since 1999?s ?When the Pawn?? A stunning live performer with a rich, smoky voice and jazzy back-up band, Apple could fit right in like fellow songbird Nelly Furtado did on the Elevation tour. The Sounds
Sweden's The Sounds recently opened several dates on The Strokes? spring tour of America in a hail of '80s electronica, and equal parts Blondie and Kraftwerk. Lead singer Maja Ivarsson is a punk rock seasoned jokester, easily whipping the young, hipster crowd into a frenzy by dancing, jumping, taunting and assailing the crowd with their phenomenally juicy tunes.
