Maybe this is news to you, but there's a conference on U2 in the works. It had to be postponed for a while and now we are looking at some possible dates and locations for the fall of 2009.

One strong contender at this point is The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in Oxford, Miss., from Oct. 2-5. We'd love some feedback on this option. More info. is on our blog and you can talk about it there or here.

How about in Cleveland, home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Fall is beautiful here in Cleveland, shouldn't the RRHoF have space?

It's a great idea and I would love to attend, but Mississippi is too far off the map for me.

Better bet would be a city with lots of cheap transport connections (ie. bus routes from major cities, Amtrak, etc.) as well as SHORT taxi rides from airports. Not worth having to rent a car to avoid a hefty bill once you land at the airport.

It's going to cost a bit more to get a conference venue in a bigger city, but there are always college campuses NEAR big cities that would probably welcome the influx of visitors and wouldn't charge top dollar (...Fordham!!). Besides, pairing together a university with a conference DURING the school year would probably attract students from all over who'd be itnerested in attending--October is not a good time for any college student to travel to a conference.

It sounds like the promoters here have a connection with Ole Miss, as the justifications for holding there (proximity to casinos or Elvis history) aren't really things that draw in U2 crowd, but are insteadthe positives for the area they're in. Nothing wrong with that, but I can't imagine a large body of board members from around the country placing Oxford, MS on a short list...:hmm:

In addition to having 3-4 days worth of activities/nightlife for conference-goers to get excited about, the city will also need venues for U2 cover bands to play (cities like Chicago, NYC, Boston, Baltimore, etc. could handle this). And if there's any shot at getting U2 to show up themselves, they'll need to be in a city where they can multi-task and get some high exposure press at the same time; roaring into Oxford, besides closing down a few blocks and a college rec center, won't do much for them as far as media exposure...

Will check back for updates.

i agree. the initial location which was New York just sounds more ideal for this thing. Theres the great transit system, lots to do over the course of days that the conference takes place, and other reasons that are not coming to mind now.

The conference was originally supposed to be in New York City. Why not have it there?
Mississippi is so random. I think having it in a major city is a way better idea. I dunno too many people who would fly out there for a conference.

NYC is a great spot, no doubt! But EXPENSIVE. Funny that when we were first planning for NYC, we had low registration and lots of comments about why we picked such an expensive place to be in.

Venues for cover and tribute bands in Oxford are not a problem. Several great places around the square.

Don't know how casinos play into peoples' thinking about this location?? Who was asking for that?

New Orleans...

I've been there twice since Katrina. The city could benefit from a boost in tourism.
U2 has shown love for NOLA, especially with Music Rising.(Thank you, Edge.)

Jersey's my home, but this is where my heart is.
