ONE love, blood, life
Perfect match: Portland, U2
By DEIRDRE FLEMING, Portland Press Herald Writer
I think it's important U2 comes to Portland.
Like many small cities today, Portland is changing at a dramatic speed.
Like Dublin 10 years ago, it is experiencing a tremendous influx of immigration and a changing industrial face as it morphs from an old working waterfront to a hip mecca of artists and online industry.
Like Bono's hometown, Portland also is a place that has become a humble home for humanitarian efforts and a place that promotes tolerance.
As a spokesperson for Third World debt forgiveness, Bono is all about humanitarian efforts.
He has shown an understanding of the need to give back with his campaign for the more than 40 countries struggling with debt.
A charity concert in Portland would be a perfect fit for him.
It may not be Rome, London or Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Portland is still a good place for him to make his plea.
For one, he could raise a new sense of awareness to this cause by bringing a charity concert to a small venue.
He would show the power possessed by a little town with a big heart.
And I think he'd find Maine's coast as close to Ireland as he'll get in the states.
If this wish cannot be heard in Heaven, please . . . just let it land on Bono's desk.
