Yeah Yeah Yeah

By John M. James

After blowing minds with the DVD series they started in 2003, Palm Pictures is releasing four more volumes in their Directors Label imprint. Due this coming Tuesday, this time the focus is on the visual ambition of directors Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast), Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo), Anton Corbijn, and Stephane Sednaoui. Each DVD collects a wild array of footage from each talent - groundbreaking music videos and rare alternative versions, commercials, short films, and commentary by the director and the musicians involved in each project. Glazer's disc contains his commercials for Guinness and Levis jeans, a collaboration with comedian Paul Kaye, and videos for Radiohead, UNKLE, Massive Attack and more. As the winner of MTV's Video Vanguard Award, the Romanek disc features his clips for Johnny Cash's “Hurt,” Nine Inch Nails' “Closer,” a 40-minute documentary, and a making of Jay-Z's “99 Problems.” Soon to direct his feature length film debut Control, the story of Ian Curtis of Joy Division, Corbijn's genius is showcased in 30 music videos, the making of U2's “Electrical Storm,” a new director's cut of U2's “One,” and an excerpt from his Captain Beefheart film Some Yo Yo Stuff. Known for her spectacular video for the Red Hot Chili Peppers' “Give It Away,” Sednaoui's DVD features 19 videos, a short film based on Lou Reed's “Walk On the Wild Side,” and her presentation at the NYU Film School. Each disc contains a 52-page booklet with drawings, storyboards and photographs... The Pet Shop Boys tackled an ambitious project last year by composing new music for the early silent film, Battleship Potemkin. This Tuesday England's Parlophone Records is releasing the import-only CD, putting an electronic backdrop to something made in 1925.... With Mother Nature showing her fury last week in the Gulf Coast, a new CD collects contemporary Native Americans in tribute to the comforting, healing nature of Mother Earth. Compiled by the Silverwave Records, Sacred Ground features ten tracks from Bill Miller, Joanne Shenandoah, and the Little Wolf Band featuring flutist Robert Mirabal... A new limited-edition CD collection is available exclusively at The Gap with a purchase of $60 or more, with eight artists selecting a favorite tune to cover, and their favorite fit of jeans. Highlights include Alanis Morissette going a little “Crazy” with the Seal hit, John Legend covering the Isley Brother's “Hello, It's Me,” Jason Mraz giving up Bob Marley's “One Love,” and Brandon Boyd's take on Elvis Costello's “Alison.” Other artists include Michelle Branch, Joss Stone and Keith Urban...
