Eminem, U2 Documentaries on DVD

On the heels of its Metallica, Green Day and Before The Dawn histories, Spain's eclectic and far-reaching Locomotive Records will release two more movie-length documentaries on arguably the two greatest influences on popular culture today. Eminem: The Complete History and U2: The Complete History will hit stores August 30.
Eminem fans are already buzzing over a July 15 article in the Detroit Free Press that hinted he may retire next month when his current tour ends. Despite denying this six days later on MTV, his publicist told Rolling Stone that the tour represents "the end of the first chapter of his career." And, in a Prince-like move, the rapper has been telling his audiences that he won't go by the names Slim Shady, Marshall Mathers or even Eminem anymore.

His current CD, Encore, has sold upwards of five million copies. Its cover has him taking a final bow. For a recent photo shoot, he insisted on being photographed in a coffin. Are these clues? Will Eminem be content to simply produce other artists on his own label a la his mentor, Dr. Dre? "Nothing is written in stone," he's already declared. "I don't know what I'm doing yet."

Eminem: The Complete History encapsulates the rapper's oeuvre in compelling style, going under the surface in a unique and authoritative manner. Unauthorized, unexpurgated and unbound by any managerial constrictions, this detailed documentary hits the bi-polar heights of success tempered by tragedy as only Eminem knows it. Its release could not be timed any more perfectly.

U2: The Complete History gives the world a similar unauthorized look into the state of the U2 art. From their humble beginnings in 1976 Dublin, to their world leadership role as musicians, spokesmen for their generation and, in the case of lead singer Bono, political activism, this two-hour blockbuster details the stories behind the stories, letting those close to the band speak as never heard before. The viewer gets to know the members of U2 as people first, rock stars second. Their story is a fascinating, circuitous route towards superstardom that no U2 aficionado could possibly be without.

Does it sound like I'll learn anything I didn't already know? No. Will I probably still buy it? Yes.

I wonder if it will be anything like the previous unauthorized doc. that I *wish I never* bought, where the 'close intimate friends' were actually a couple of local reporters and friends, of friends, of friends etc. And because of the authorized state they could only use bad elevator music for teh backround!

Yeah I have that one too... and like stars, I will have too buy this one also.

I will wait for someone here to buy it first, give us a report, and then decide if I want to buy it.

And yes, I, too, was a victim of that craptastic, fake, elevator music U2 CD myself.

I definitely won't spend any of my hard earned cash on that. There's enough authorized U2 stuff out there, like VH1 All Access, U2 Legend, and various other authorized (TV) documentations on their music and band history.

I don't know how I feel about these unauthorized things . . .
