Bono Attending Panafrica HIV/AIDS Conference

Legendary boxing promoter Don King will be the keynote speaker at the prestigious PanAfrica Freedom Awards banquet scheduled for October 27, 2006. The banquet is part of the PanAfrica HIV/AIDS conference scheduled to start on October 26 at the Millennium Maxwell House Hotel, Nashville, Tennessee.

The three day event will focus on overcoming the challenges many countries and organizations face in delivering resources to HIV/AIDS stricken populations.

Representatives of the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Global Health Council, Meharry Medical College, as well as delegates from Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Haiti will participate in the conference. Panel discussions will range from HIV vaccine development to the role of traditional medicine in the fight against the pandemic.

"This is one of the first conferences to deal with fundamental issues, such as determining how to engage in a care and treatment effort where there is no healthcare delivery system, no hospitals, clinics or safe roads," says Dr. Wilbert Jordan, Executive Director of Oasis HIV/AIDS Clinics in Los Angeles and co-covener of the conference.

Several AIDS organizations will participate in the event, including the National Minority AIDS Council, Nashville Cares, New Directions, the AIDS Memorial Quilt Foundation, Global Health Council, and the Global AIDS Alliance.

Internationally known HIV/AIDS Vaccine Scientist Dr. Barney Graham of the National Institutes of Health will open the conference with a presentation titled "HIV Vaccine Development: A Global Imperative".

Also scheduled to speak are Rep. Harold Ford, Jr. (D) Tennessee, Supreme Court Justice Adolpho Birch, Senator Barak Obama (D) Illinois, Ghana's Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Gladys Ashitey, Singer/Activist Bono, Tennessee Secretary of State Riley Darnell, Rev. Edwin Sanders, Member of President Bush's advisory council on HIV/AIDS, and Dr. Remi Desalu, Director of the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency, Nigeria.
