Rare U2 Photos Expected to Fetch High Price

Rare early photographs of U2 are expected to be snapped up for thousands of euro at a heated auction in Dublin later today.

After a single signed photograph of the band by renowned photographer Anton Corbijn sold for €12,000 late last year, James Adams Salesrooms on Dublin’s St Stephen’s Green is now offering a collection of four of his prints.

The previously unseen black and white pictures feature the four members of U2 - Bono, The Edge, Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton – and the child, Peter Rowen, who featured on the band’s Boy and War albums in the early 1980s.

The prints, which are accompanied by a hand-written note to Bono from the photographer who has been credited with helping form the band’s early image, are estimated to sell for between €8,000 to €12,000 as a combined lot.

Jane Battie, head of Fine Art at Adams, said the auctioneers were expecting to achieve another record price for the photographs, which are owned by Mr Rowen, in tonight’s Contemporary and Modern Art Sale.

“These very poignant photographs of the band belong to and feature Peter Rowen (aka Radar), the young man that was the face of U2’s most iconic early album covers,” she said.

“We are privileged to be offering such a collection of early photographs of the band and expect a considerable interest in this lot from both fans of U2 and of Corbijn’s photography.”

The collection is lot number 121 in the sale which begins at 6.30pm in James Adams & Sons salesrooms on St Stephen’s Green.
