Crewes Declares Cedar Falls a ONE Community

By JON ERICSON, Courier Staff Writer

CEDAR FALLS, IA --- This week, Jon Crews stood with Bill Gates, Bono and George Clooney.

Well, not in person, but he joined them in spirit as the Cedar Falls mayor signed a pledge with the One Campaign.

The One Campaign seeks to raise awareness and join people together in combating extreme poverty and AIDS on a global scale.

At a Tuesday event, Crews declared Cedar Falls, a city of One, as many other cities across America have done.

"Cedar Falls believes that in the best American tradition of helping others help themselves, now is the time to join in a historic pact for compassion and justice to help the poorest people of the world overcome AIDS and extreme poverty," Crews said.

Katherine Baudino is a University of Northern Iowa student active in the One Campaign. She will be in the student union for the next month asking people to sign a letter to Rep. Jim Nussle asking that he fully fund President George Bush's budget allocation for international aid.

Baudino finds the One Campaign to be a grass-roots effort to solve world problems.

"It's really about getting American citizens together for awareness of the situation and to push our elected officials to get more money, food and aid to these countries," Baudino said.

The campaign is supported by Bill and Melinda Gates and their foundation. It also has been promoted by a long list of celebrities, including rock band U2 frontman Bono, who spoke at the launch of the campaign.

Last year, Gov. Tom Vilsack declared Iowa a state of One.

David Glen-Burns, a minister and director of the Wesley Foundation, also volunteers for One. He said the One Campaign emphasizes the fact that it is nonpartisan.

"It's getting information out for ways to fight extreme poverty and global AIDS. Part of it is to influence people who might pass legislation," Glen-Burns said.

To date, more than 37 cities and four states have signed on in support of the One Campaign. The organization claims more than two million supporters.

It was created by 11 nonprofit aid and humanitarian organizations including CARE, the International Rescue Committee, Save The Children U.S. and World Vision.
