Billboard Adding Digital Downloads to Its Charts
First Bono, now Billboard--digital music players have now officially entered the mainstream. Billboard will include for the first time the sales of downloaded songs in its weekly calculation of its Hot 100, a list of the country’s most popular songs that had been based solely on radio play. The change is affecting the rankings already. Next week, 50 Cent's new single "Candy Shop" will jump from No. 30 on the chart to No. 8 because it is the most popular downloaded song. The music industry shunned the digital marketplace for years but is now beginning to appreciate its significance. Artists should be thrilled, because airplays and traditional singles buys don't always reflect online popularity. Singer Mario‘s hit "Let Me Love You" has been selling about 500 copies per week in traditional outlets but has been getting about 17,000 downloads a week.
