Making U2 Sound Like Insects
U2.com has posted the second part of its members-only exclusive interview with Jacknife Lee. A taste:
U2.com: What are you most pleased with in terms of your personal contribution?
I love the start of 'Miracle Drug'. That was one of the first things I did. I've always loved the song, right from the off.
U2.com: What did you do with it?
I wanted to follow the vocal path, which starts small then spreads out and is expansive and beautiful. There's nothing better than the sound of a band in full flight. I wanted it to sound like a really good tracking shot in a movie - like the start of ET or Goodfellas.
So I took what they'd recorded, processed it through different filters, and put my insect noises on. With U2, generally, you don't put your own sounds on there (though I did play a toy glockenspiel…) You're manipulating more traditional noises to make them sound unusual.
I did a string arrangement - cellos and stuff - and Edge played some fantastic guitar over the top of it.
