Video Alert: Bono Interview now on EUX.TV__________________
BRUSSELS, 29 Jan. (EUX.TV) - The fifth and final report with highlights from the 2007 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, including an interview with U2 rock star Bono, now is ready for viewing on EUX.TV, the Europe channel.
Bono attended the WEF meeting in Davos to pressure Western governments into delivering on their commitment to tackle poverty. Bono has been a regular at the World Economic Forum for the last few years.
Two years ago, the rock star played an influential role in the debate that led the Group of eight industrial countries to promise a plan to cancel debts of poor countries. Germany in June of this year organizes the 2007 G8 summit.
"We are going to find out very soon. In particular this German G8, which is gonna be at Heiligendam," Bono said.
"It's two years on. It's time to take the temperature. There were some serious promises made. Cheques were signed, but as we know, people sign cheques... they like signing them, particularly politicians, but they don't like cashing them. That's what we are going to find out.
"Those cheques weren't big enough in the first place. If those promises are not kept, it's a kind of scandal .... It will make a generation of cynics. I don't believe that is going to happen. I am still optimistic that we will get through this," he said.
Other people commenting in Day 5 of Davos are Thabo Mbeki, South Africa's President; Jonathan Oppenheimer, director of De Beers Diamonds; Stelios Haji-Iaonnou, founder of Easyjet; Michael Chertoff; US senators John McCain and John Kerry; and crown prince Haakon of Norway.
