Bono Takes on Fatcats at Swiss Forum

Rock star Bono is rubbing shoulders with Tony Blair and Bill Clinton in Switzerland at a conference about policy on the environment and Third World debt.

Showbiz stars such as Angelina Jolie, Sharon Stone and Richard Gere are also expected to show up, adding glamour to the proceedings which are dominated by the world's leading industrialists.

Mr Blair, who takes over as chairman of the G8 group of industrialised countries this year, is at the World Economic Forum in the resort of Davos to highlight environmental issues.

He will examine relations between rich countries and Africa with Mr Clinton, South African President Thabo Mbeki, Nigeria's Olusegun Obasanjo and the U2 frontman.

And Chancellor Gordon Brown will meet Microsoft chairman Bill Gates to debate development in Africa.

Mr Gates announced earlier this week he is giving $750 million (£403 million) to support immunisation programmes in developing countries.

The fight against Aids will be a major item on the agenda. UN agencies have said the number of patients receiving life-extending drugs in poor countries has jumped to 700,000 from 440,000 six months ago.

And Middle East peace could also be a major topic if newly-elected Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas arrives to join Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom and deputy prime minister Shimon Peres.

Swiss authorities have mobilised up to 5,000 troops to protect the well-heeled and well-connected guests from anti-globalisation activists who gather each year to protest at what they see as a celebration of free-market capitalism.

Well, for anyone who's come over here from the other posting, I think Zola's comment might have something to do with the ridiculously high cost of tickets for the European leg of the Vertigo tour.
