MIT Shuts Down Dublin Research Facility
Ed. Note: Both Bono and Edge served on the Media Lab Europe board. In summer 2003, Interference.com posted a profile of the lab that can be read here.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology reportedly shut down Media Lab Europe Friday, a research facility in Dublin, Ireland, employing 60 people.
MIT created the lab in 2000 with funding from the Irish government. Like its forebear on MIT's Cambridge campus, Media Lab Europe focused on developing innovative ways for people to manipulate or interact with digital data.
The facility attracted intense media interest, with a board that included Dave Evans, guitarist for the rock band U2 who is known under the pseudonym The Edge.
Media Lab Europe reportedly was $10 million over budget in 2003, and needed a $90 million infusion to survive, according to The Times, a United Kingdom publication.
The news came less than two years after MIT pulled out of a similar project with the Indian government for a center in Bangalore.
